Re: Is class D Hi-Fi?

And therefore the Rowland 925 should NOT be used as an example of competence by Rowland in terms of the sound quality. But it would be fair to hold it up as an example of competence in Veblen marketing. As NO ONE here has ever heard this Rowland 925, how on earth can any comment about sound quality...

Re: Is class D Hi-Fi?

Is that meant to be a criticism ? If so, why ? $58,000 Rowland Model 925 amplifier? Let's put it to the test. Let's bake it off against - for example £2250 NVA M600's. My prediction is that the NVA wiil sound better. What's your prediction? Fascinating. How will you propose obtaining this Rowland a...

Re: Is class D Hi-Fi?

You should have asked the designer of this, https://www.jeffrowlandgroup.com/model-925/ , Mr Rowland seems to know what he's doing with Class D. Based on the content of the linked page I must have forgotten a lot about Power Factor or there is a lot of sales talk in there. A resistive load has a po...

Indeed there are and, if you have the skills, plenty that are easily repaired because of their simplicity. I don’t think anyone would call class D simple, they are certainly not simple to repair.

Is class D Hi-Fi?

This may be inappropriate for a subjectivist forum but I’ll ask anyway. Class D amplifiers are appearing in all sorts of audio products, they offer high power, cool running and lower cost. They are also light and small but, with all the output filters and processing, are they really Hi-Fi? I have no...

Re: It's all been said before

I have noticed recently that “critical reasoning” is in short supply. Huge numbers of people believe what they are told, especially if the person doing the telling is in some position of authority. In Hi-Fi this translates to, “reviewer X says it sounds good so It must be good”. Anyone who has found...

Re: It's all been said before

It seems that the days when engineers designed amps, arms, speakers etc. for their own satisfaction and then found that a market existed for them are gone. Now, it appears, there are people out there whose whole purpose is to bring in maximum income for minimum outlay. Posh fuses, extravagant earthi...

Re: It's all been said before

The thing I like about HFS is that it's not about should I buy this or that bit of kit. I particularly enjoy different members journeys into digital excellence, and as for the DIY adventures of one particular member I have to say I'm in awe. There are plenty of people who um and arr about decisions...

Re: It's all been said before

I have DAB in my car but the facility that links DAB stations to FM stations is disabled... Daft question(s), Geoff, is it deliberately disabled by the manufacturer? Have you "Googled" the model of your radio with something like "enable DAB FM link."? Something like " Pione...

Re: It's all been said before

I might try and stretch it to a DAB radio these days though; for the variety, not the quality you understand. Some time back I mentioned Boppin Bob (Bob Jones) a mastering engineer. I remember sitting in a friends lounge discussing DAB with him. He was far from impressed with it and said we h...
