ATC v AVI v EV bake-off

Unread post by Lindsayt » Sat Sep 24, 2016 1:02 am

Went to a bake off this afternoon.

Systems were:

1. Laptop, Hegel 360 amp, ATC 11 speakers (bought new with a discount).

2. Laptop, AVI DM10 (bought new) with £200 subwoofer

3 Denon C630 (£15) or laptop, NVA P50SA (£166), Korneff 45 clone (c£1250), EV Sentry III (£415 + c£80 in repair parts). The NVA and Korneff were replaced by a Creek CAS4040 (£99 new 1983) about half way through the bake off.

For sound quality, system 3 won. System 1 lost.

On the day, everyone present agreed on which was the best and worst sounding system and the main reasons why.
On some tracks it seemed that I thought the differences were more clear cut than what the other people attending thought. But that's fine. When describing degrees of difference we can all have different scales.

I would also like to say that you couldn't hope to meet 2 nicer blokes than the host "andrewjvt" and the AVI owner "lpv".
And I found it a really enjoyable way to pass an afternoon and evening.

It's one of those rare occasions when size in inches matters more than the size of your wallet.

There's a parallel universe thread on this bake-off over here: http://www.whathifi.com/forum/hi-fi/so- ... great-bake

And here's a thread on the first bake-off between the AVI and ATC systems http://www.whathifi.com/forum/hi-fi/pas ... active-set
Which has some posts that I found quite funny.

I'd have said the biggest speaker would have won on scale of presentation alone.
...I have renounced the worldly bustle and live in peace at a quiet place,
I live alone in this my heaven, in my love (and) in my songs.
