Re: Goodmans Magnum K Refurb and Modification (part 2)
It was my decision I would use no crossover components on the bass driver but dope it, I would have a series capacitor on the mid driver to protect it from too much bass and leave it full range upward and dope the cone. I would use a single series capacitor on the tweeter to protect it.
But if you want to avoid doping then this will help you calculate a 3 way 1st order crossover. But you still have to use your ears especially for sensitivity.

The original magnum paper tweeters definitely measure 3ohms out of circuit. Is this good or bad for 3 way design?Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote:I have never heard of a 3 ohm tweeter.
Anyway suck it and see if you want to.
Doc, I've given your suggestion of doping considerable thought and while I'm in agreement that this method is capable of producing superior results, I seriously doubt I have got the required skill or experience to achieve such results. I feel the same way about the first order crossover.
As it happens the tweeters I took from the Mezzo's are SEAS h-087's and imho are excellent. They have offered what i felt was missing from the Magnums which was that top end sparkle which completely detracted interest from the higher frequencies produced by snares and symbols mainly.
So for now my problem is solved but I'm interested to know what 'order' xover is already fitted into the Magnums because now that I've removed the lpads there is only really two caps and two inductors (not sure what they do) and that's it?

Re: Goodmans Magnum K Refurb and Modification (part 2)
Hi Doc, Ronin is currently trying remove the l-pads from his magnums and I was trying to assist (probably blind leading the blind) as I have completed this mod, however my xover has a resistor where Ronin's doesn't and I cant work out where things are supposed to go in the absence of the resistor?
As always, your help will be greatly appreciated!

I will need photos as I am not there to look and I don't have the speaker. I would say just bridge the whole thing out of circuit and listen. It will probably need a fixed resistor in place of the pot you have to judge by ear but start with nothing.
