The Linn Kan crossover wasn't as simple as some suggested

Unread post by _D_S_J_R_ »

In one of our discussions a while ago, I remember the Kan being said to have a simple basic crossover. When I made a pair up at Linn back in 1983, I remember the Falcon made crossovers as being a bit more than that - and here they are...

Those pesky electrolytics will have to go though ;)

I count 7 bits. That's not that complex in the grand scheme of things but definately not 'simple and basic'. Odd speakers, Kans.

Except for you know who , you wil not find many simpler.
having looked at many many on google in my search for the perfect crossovers , i would say 2 inductors , 3 bi-polars and 2 resistors is par for the course these days in so called simple cross overs . there are variations but 6/7 elements is the norm .

You've got your Wharfedale Delta 30. I repaired some for one of my brothers. Just a cap on the tweeter and that's it. Or the floorstanders I built for a mate, two way design with no crossover components at all (tweeter was a piezo so no need to protect it). Lots of cheapo speakers from the 70s and 80s just had a cap on the tweeter.

I hardly think the floorstanders you built for a mate are germane to the thread

The first Kans using bankrupt Chartwell LS3/5a cabinets were very simple. They made it more complex later.

Didn't improve them though - that KEF B110 is a dreadful device and goes bananas at the top of its range. Not sure if thorough doping would sort it (Linn added extra PVA to every B110 and B200 they used up until the Kan II and Sara 9).

PVA is not good because it is water based, it changes and eventually gets brittle if in the air. Rubber based is better and the more natural the rubber the better as in Latex, but there has to be additives to make dry evenly but still stay flexible.

Truly dreadful ! After the debacle I had with some Cambridge R50 I've come to the conclusion that all old Kef drivers are rubbish. Generally speaking those who enjoy them now are the very same folk who enjoyed them 30-40 years ago... No taste see ;)
