To MOD Or Not To MOD ?????

Unread post by AshM750. »

TO MOD OR NOT TO MOD, THAT IS THE QUESTION ???????? :-?

I had the Genexxa monitors throught the post today, stuck them on the side and stuck some classic POP through them! What a terrible sound, I could not listen to them for more than 5 mins, theres nothing good about them at all. I think I may not bother, what does everyone think ?????

I dont want to waste my time. They are fully enclosed with no wadding ect

Mod them, you will be very very surprised. They are a perfect candidate to prove the process.

The two caps could easily and cheaply be uprated to poly types without breaking the bank - leaving the crossovers intact for the minute ;) The little boxes have absolutely nothing inside them whatsoever and thin chipboard needs reinforcing somehow with something, even if it's copious amounts of adhesive IMO

As for the drivers, the magnets look to be a fair size (I know this doesn't tell you much) and the sound may improve with some box mods and cap replacements..

Everything but the drive units is wrong. 7.2mfd on the tweeter :-? 5mfd at the most and it were me I would use the highest quality 3.3mfd I could find. Padding resistor leave to the end and choose by ear. Remove coil and cap for bass mid driver and *copiously dope the cone and dust cap* that is potentially a good driver.. But the big problem is the crap cabinet - loads of steel plate will cure that, and don't forget the baffle if you can get some on.

Prepare to be shocked at the end of the process.

Thanks everyone, I will give them a shot then.

I shall buy some 5mm steel sheet tomorrow, cut it to size and stick that in, I have just ordered some Bison kit and spray dopping stuff that Doc recommended. The next thing will be the crossover :-?

You don't need a crossover, just a series cap to protect the tweeter from low frequencies and eventually a padding resistor to balance the two drivers to each other for level.
