Building wooden hifi enclosures

Unread post by karatestu »

I am thinking of builbing wooden enclosures for my amps and power supplies.

Is it safe to build in a combustible material ? I will of course need some metal for heat sinking.

Back in the day, it was pretty common to find amplifiers and tuners sold in either chassis form or with a wooden enclosure. The Armstrong 500 series and Rogers Ravensbrook / Ravensbourne spring to mind. They had ventilation slots in the top IIRC.

Thanks for the replies.

I have in the past been warned about fire regulations in case of arcing. Then there is the lack of screening and all the arm chair experts saying wood is a no no.

I think to hell with it. I will just try it out for myself and see what happens. Holes for heat escape should not be a problem - i have a drill and drill bits !

I do think that wooden enclosures are some of the most aesthetically pleasing i have seen.

Cheers Simon, a good link there.

I wonder if with a wooden enclosure i can hard wire everything with tinned slid core.

Not sure K, I can do mains cables, speaker cables and interconnects but amp innards are a mystery to me!
