NVA amps with passive preamps

Unread post by Ubik-energy »

My A30MKii is actually connected to a active line stage of classic design. I plann in future to try a passive and possibly order a NVA. Some friends DIY could lend me a couple of passive preamps based on the nelson pass B1 buffer passive pre and DCB1 again passive but DC coupled.
In my full ignorance and before plugging anything to my beloved NVA, I wonder if any risk can arise.
B1 seems safe but the DCB1 is a "Direct Coupled" Buffer, therefore 0it does not block DC from coming or passing through it.

Will this means I will have DC at the NVA power amp outputs? In the few things i remember from past, DC fries speakers...
I apologize if I said idiot things, forgive that.

It is designed to be used with a passive pre-amp, if said pre-amp has a buffer stage it is no longer a passive pre-amp, it is active, so is not recommended.

"but will work OK with active pre-amps or direct feed from a DAC"

So that OK does not mean that can be used with active circuits? Maybe the meaning is it is possible but not advised?

It CAN be used but is not recommended. If you want the full benefit of NVA power amps you should use NVA passive pre-amp.

The NVA power-amp design has extra gain built in, which would otherwise be a line driver stage in an active preamp. Using an active preamp in effect adds an extra gain stage which isn't necessary. If your DAC has a variable output, I see no reason why this couldn't drive the power amp directly, as long as the interconnects aren't too long (a metre or so, rather than several?) and of good quality (SSC would be a great choice here as the capacitance is very low and price reasonable...).

Then you should get a passive pre-amp. There would be no sonic advantage to using a pre with a buffer stage, in fact it would be a disadvantage. A buffer stage works when using a passive into a power amp designed to work with active pre-amps.

I run a RaspberryPi with a Dacboard as my audio streamer. It goes into the passive pre and all is good.

The Doc has one or two hand made P50's with replaced phono sockets on the back (that damned superglue, heat and solder gets everywhere  ...) for not much more than the Tisbury, which is extremely limited in comparison and possibly not the correct match anyway ;)
