Off topic I know but but thanks for that, it begins to answer why some people believe they have to drive amplifiers into clipping.Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote:Some extra inf on the subject.
One of the things that tells our ears that a sound is loud is distortion. When amplifier circuits are driven into distortion, they create high-frequency harmonics of the original sound. The extra high-frequency content makes the sound seem louder. Also, when an amplifier reaches distortion, its dynamic range is reduced: although the quietest sounds it reproduces are increased in level, the loudest sounds it can reproduce are limited by its output capability. This will also make it seem louder. These two factors combined can make an amplifier with limited power driven to distortion seem louder than an amplifier with greater output operated within its limits.
Some inexperienced guitarists will set the level of an ‘overdriven’ channel at a lower level than the ‘clean’ channel. Without any other cues, the distortion of the ‘overdriven’ sound makes it seem louder, where a meter shows it is in fact lower in level.
From - http://www.astralsound.com/loudness.htm a good article by the way as PA companies have to understand this and are not subject to the bullshit hi-fi users are.

OK. They're in and playing. So here's some none Musical first impressions.
They're not plugged into the BMU, yet but they're already much quieter than my previous amps.
They're heavy.
The base plate (20mm acrylic square that goes at the bottom) weighs 1.9kg
Each speaker unit weighs 16.5 kg
Each power supply weighs 18.5 kg
You do not want to drop any part of these on your toes.

I'd advise sticking to light music to start with. No heavy metal until you're sure the floor can handle the extra mass.

Re: Terry's two stage Cubix Pro build
My initial thoughts about these.
I've just plonked them down where the Cubix were - so no attempt at fine tuning. And I'm afraid the next bit is a bit boring - the usual NVA stuff - instruments have more of their own voice, a piano sounds more like a piano, more music and so on. In the first few minutes of listening there were instruments jumping out of familiar pieces which I hadn't noticed before but I soon stopped listening to the hifi and enjoyed myself throwing different bits of music at them.
