Well the best solution is to not try to hold on to the old ways. If in all your time in the industry you have created skills beyond magazine bullshit then apply them. Create a product and sell it direct, or if you have no product but a skill in modifying or repairing, then do that. You will be surprised how much personal satisfaction comes from helping and supplying the enthusiasts instead of living off them as a hanger on.

The forums will provide your market place.

Just my opinion as you well know.

There is no official confirmation he is dead, he just retired and turned his back on the industry.

Seriously if any of you think I am a cantankerous old git you should have met Joe Ackroyd, he out did me by a wide margin.
Richard I think you are just misunderstood I'm sure everybody would agree

We had a good laugh as we both had the same poor opinion about the industry, especially dealers. If he could have sold direct I am certain he would have, as would I, but you couldn't at the time without committing commercial suicide.

Regarding the drive units if what you say was a general problem then you would find comment from current users, and no one I know has displaced a driver and there is no comment on the forums about it. The only current problem being commented on is the gunk he used around the voice coils drying out.
I dare say there are few displaced drivers today because the knuckle-dragging end of the buying marketplace of 25+ years ago has moved on to bigger and louder things. We could spot the speaker-breakers from about 10 paces, but if they came in with copies of Hi-Fi Review under their arm, they had a very narrow view of what they could own. It would be a Rega, a Creek and a pair of Royds (which did sound very good, but needed to be set in context). But as we all know, unfortunately people tend to believe what someone tells them more than they believe their ears. I say 'unfortunately' but it's the difference between working and busking for me.
Indeed, a lot of people seem to like to be told what is good and what to buy. Never understood it myself.

Sheep :animals-sheep: a lot of them seem to live on Salisbury Plain or the hills near Glasgow, or wish they did. The reviewers and the forum big knobs (willy wavers) are the wolves that try to herd the sheep around, thankfully it seems to me with less and less success. BUT the MDAC and TQ cable thing proves you can still bully some of them into submission. Personally I just prefer to watch them and take the piss.

I was initially taking issue with Ali’s sentence , but now the docs requoted it so i’ll take issue with both, though Docs is aimed at the usual suspects so my comments do not 100% apply.

Often, when being an arse with defendant solicitors my preferred preamble is to advise that being a pedant is not my preferred persona ,but I suspect it may be, so here goes . :D

This is a us and them sentence [ not intrinsically a bad thing ] but it is without merit .

Nobody makes decisions in a vacuum , your own purchase of the TFS was no doubt influenced by writings on forums and nobody his suggesting you were told what to buy and nobody is suggesting that you bought it for any reason that when you listened to it you liked/loved it . Indeed Mr Sircom’s comment –necessarily as a magazine editor- is far more nuanced than your own .

The reality of the situation is that it is not possible to listen and hear everything , especially if you prefer to listen to music than box swap ,so there is a place for educated expert comment to influence decisions . This is neither good or bad , it is just one way of obtaining knowledge to influence a purchase and it is somewhat churlish to try and obtain an implied personal superiority by suggesting there is a better way . Indeed it is also incorrect , as advised nobody makes decisions in a vacuum . I bought a benz Micro S l, because numerous people said it was good and I like it , I like it a lot .
There is an issue to separate to genuine and honest from the bullshit, but that does not negate my argument to a certain extent we are all sheep to people with knowledge and experience . transpose Ali’s sentence in to a medical context .

"Indeed a lot of people like to be told what is good for them by their doctor and what operation they need , never understood that myself ."

Nobody ever bought a product they thought was bad and we all by products with a priori information, that does not make you a sheep. However if you don’t like it and you keep it, that makes you an idiot. Hifi is journey of discovery it amazes me that’s those further along the path to where ever take some smug satisfaction simply from the fact they are further along. Elasped time on its own is not something to be proud off . We all poo’d in our nappies at some stage .

Rant over from this sheep , wolf and primary human being . :D

p.s can somebody clarify the well being or otherwise of Mr Akroyd, not sure the equivocality on this forum is appropriate . His wiki page mentions nothing and neither does the internet .
