Terry, thats not a bit of topic, but way of topic :D , but it gives me an excuse to rant and rave. The doc is right, legislation failed, because it was crap. Much of this debate is about freedom of choice and free markets.

Free market is a term for oxy-moron's. There is no such thing as a free market, all legal markets are fettered by law, legislation, norms, cultures and individuals. The only question is what restrictions should exist to benefit the populace.

There is a groundswell of opinion who berate red tape, human rights, health and safety, European legislation and bang on and on and on and on and on about free markets and how if they were just left to run free, the world would be better.

There is only one true free market on this planet and that is the market in Cocaine.

Free Markets are for Oxy-Morons.

So the solution, not quite sure  , but it involves fettering the freedom of the powerfull.

The only free market is direct selling, it is always the middlemen that create corruption. With large markets like food it will never go direct, apart from on the fringes, like specialities and organic. So sad as I feel about it the supermarkets serve a purpose for the basics, but how do we make sure the producer gets an adequate share of the profit is still a problem that needs solving. But for specialist markets like ours retail is just an on cost and gets in the way.

People i.e. customers decide what a product is worth, and that is the real freedom, too little and they lose choice and the development of good product, too much and then the market subsides because people (apart from some idiots) wont pay it. The real value of things I believe is being set by the second hand market, and it always amuses me when customers tell me they have made a profit by selling their Naim and suchlike second hand and buying NVA new  sorry to blow my own trumpet :shifty:

It's a quality market , not a free market .

CE regs and distance selling to name but 2 of an applicable 40 odd restrictions upon freedom.

They are not restrictions, distance selling regs are logical, and I would do it anyway as it is logical customer service.

CE regs are a pile of nonsense, and are not being enforced because if they were there would be no valve amps on the market as a valve *cannot* pass CE - full stop!! Everyone just self certificates. I get around them by using Class 2 regs as they actually fit into my designs so I make no compromises for CE. The other regs like disposal regs are just being ignored.

Do you really think this stuff being sold on ebay and made in China passes CE - no bloody way, and some of it is downright dangerous, but do they try to stop it - no - they don't have the staff or the available bureaucracy to deal with it and they can't afford to create it. Most of it is just euro bolloxs pipe dreams dreamt up in Brussels anyway.

Well i think youve pretty much hit the nail on the head Doc.
Times are hard at present (recession and all), folk's I think aren't prepared to splash the cash - the same as they once did.
We crave and value good products at a fair price ....NVA.... fit's the bill nicely.
There are others out out there in hifi land who also provide great bangs for yer buck, not many, but on the increase i think.
Direct selling (out with the middle men) its the way to go.

Simple is fine......Best - not sure.?

I once owned a COPLAND valve amp (big bugger) and on opening it up to replace a dodgy valve was quite amazed at how (Choc a Bloc complicated it all -
looked ) they managed to cleverly shoehorn all the kit in the case...!!!! Good sound though.

It was expensive and had to be due to the design...

My NVA A70s sound better at a fifth of the price....So what gives

Anyway better shoot - starting to ramble now - bye.

I have noticed a disproportionate amount of my UK business has been from Scotland recently. This could be down to three reasons 1/ they are tight fisted  2/ most of the hi-fi dealers in Scotland have closed 3/ the Scots have better ears than the rest of us :?

Perhaps they are trying to drown the sound of bagpipes.

OK I give up, the number of times you have mentioned this has finally drawn my attention. So is this plain ordinary mince meat and boiled potatoes, or like an English shepherds pie, or are there some special Scottish ingredients that make it so special - recipe please.
