Solid floors and speaker support.

Unread post by terrybooth »

I'd like your thoughts on speaker supports. I've got or have had a number of different combinations over the years but have the idea that I should have spikes top and bottom. However, I now have small speakers blutacked to speaker stands and I have plain wood or tiled floors. Having nearly choked myself sanding the floor and then nearly embalmed myself using proper floor varnish (I can still smell the formaldehyde), the thought of driving spikes into the floorboards or chipping the tiles drives me to put something under the spikes - pennies or some granite drink coasters.

But somebody out there must've struggled with this problem before me. Is there a sonically effective way of coupling speaker stands to the the floor where you don't have carpets to hide the mess?

Small coins are best. Don't use Blutack, it decouples.

What about these :

If you contact the seller he will sell them in sets of 4 .
I have also used wooden draught pieces in the past , cheap but effective.

Or try these by the same guy. The speaker spikes sit in the little metal cups on the top of the wood, protecting beautiful flooring surface.
other brands are available....

Whatever you do don't use the Atacama spike cups/protectors. They have a rubber insert that sits on the floor and when I eventually moved my speakers they had left completely indelible brown rings on my flooring!

Zebbo, I can definitely second that. I was in rental accommodation with wooden floors so I got the Atacama spike boots (i think that's what they're called) to go under my speaker stands. And when we moved out low and behold eight perfect circles indelibly imprinted in the varnish.
However they're currently under my T/T and doing a great job.

Thanks all. Some inspiration there and a few things to try. I've got some bits of oak lying around and a few pennies. I've also got some sand and cement - maybe I'll make myself some concrete speaker stands - they'll still be lighter than the Cubixes.
[Edit] I thought I was joking. I've just googled concrete speaker stands!!!!

You really must stop chucking yourselves at the speakers - they'll become paranoid...

Wasn't it Townsend who came up with loudspeakers stands like giant swinging jockstraps.
