Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
Hi Fi is as much of a fashion thing as most of gadgets.
If Dyson comes up with a speaker looking like their bladeless fans they will sell like hot buns no matter the price or sound quality...

I think all speakers are sh*te, it's just a matter of chosing the flavour of sh*te which pisses you off the least.

I don't think that's true. They are not perfect, but listening to my speakers as been ace.

Stu, next time Audio-Talk have their fest at Owston you might like to come over and see what DIY hi-fi can achieve.
Amps and speakers galore, and more specialised things like valve DACs.

Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
My post was deliberately exaggerated because sometimes that is the only way to get people to post I don't think all speakers sound sh*te but many probably do. I just get a bit down hearted when a recording loses the attack, emotion and character of real instruments especially drums (which I hear first hand a lot). I know it's not just the speakers fault but the recording has a part to play.
I have thought about going to Owston before but I talked myself out of it. I was going to go specifically to meet RD but he ended up not going so I didn't

I had the pleasure to meet Richard at Owston, the last time he attended.
In person he was a pussycat, and not at all like many found him to be as his online self.
Stu, when the next Owston is due, you owe it to yourself to make a visit. Being in Yorkshire you shouldn't have far to go.

He said the same things face to face as he said online. Any difference was down to the interpretation of the recipient. Online, there is much more room for interpretation.valvesRus wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 12:00 pmI had the pleasure to meet Richard at Owston, the last time he attended.

Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
At the last couple of bake-offs that I attended with Richard where I brought some equipment along he tested me.
By asking me after we'd played the first piece of music on my gear what I thought.
So I told him, including a mention of the aspects of the sound that were relatively poor each time.
I think I passed his tests because he didn't contradict me and he expanded a little bit on what I said.
If I had come out with some total bollocks I'm confident he would have pulled me up on it.
Because that was the sort of guy he was. Very straight up. Very principled. Very honest. Especially when it came to the relative sound of hi-fi. He was also a bit short tempered (or as he put it cantakerous) and there were cerrtain hi-fi related triggers that would set him off.
I agree with savvypaul.
It would be inaccurate to portray Richard as the sort of bloke that was a kitten face to face and a keyboard warrior on the Internet.
==============================
As for Owston - it is a highly inspirational event.
The biggest shame is that there aren't more events like Owston. Smaller than Kegworth. Bigger than a bake-off in someone's home.
I think that there's scope for some sort of Richard Dunn Memorial event (or whatever label anyone wants to put on it), where we get together somewhere with whatever hi-fi kit people want to bring and have a listen and chat and an optional bite to eat or drink.

That's the problem with internet "conversations". all the visual cues are missing.
I don't enjoy phone calls for much the same reason.
