If you want real thermionic street cred a scope clock takes a lot of beating.

If the budget were increased to £1500, that would open the door to some good SET's that'd be difficult to find at £500 - apart from once in a lifetime right place right time ultra bargains. Good that is when matched with the right type of speakers - high efficiency and not too low a minimum impedance.
