Audiophile Cafes

Unread post by SteveTheShadow »

An interesting development in London's Kings Cross district, influenced partly by the Classic Album Sundays movement, but in a pub/cafe environment. They've been doing it in Japan for years of course (Mr Sakuma's restaurant)

Two half-caf latte macchiatos and The Dark Side of the Moon in the sweet spot please.

My main worry would be that the first obvious question for a customer to ask would be "How much does this lot cost then?" The owners are then stuck explaining that no, you don't have to spend THAT much and no it WON'T sound as good as this but...

I'd have liked to see a more "typical" system installed.

The owners should say this is far from a domestic environment and you do not have to spend a fortune on something that will blow the usual Spotify Bluetooth speaker out of the water at home.

I am reminded of a couple of things:

In my dim distant past I went with a group to a disco - I'm NOT a disco fan and I don't dance well. There was a moderate sized dance floor and 4 speakers around it. I was pleasantly surprised that, instead of the usual "Boom and Tish" came a smooth coherent sound. I was well impressed and was persuaded to dance (not a pretty sight!).

When my kids went to college they each wanted a sound system. I wasn't blessed with a lot of cash and so bought at Richer Sounds. They all had variants on the Denon DM integrated units (DM37 & 38 if it's of any interest) and small speakers. I still love those mission 700's. They weren't amazingly analytical but I think they are amazingly musical. They also make a good sound system for connecting to a computer.
Blusound Vault 2, P50SA, A80's, BMU, TIS, LS7, MA PL200, Meridian 506 (18 bit).

Or the owners could say that you can get a vaguely similar sytem for £600. And that the acoustics at home may well be better than at their club.

You need a hook and you need advertising, the hook is the hi-fi and being unusual it drew in the media, as a launch it is worth the half million. The test is will it last the test of time, will people keep coming back. I hope so, anything that shows better music even if this is daft slurp in terms of the system and its cost, is good.

It may have give Petfood Pete a new idea - The Wigwam Hi-Fi cafe, if he can find room to promote it on his cluttered pages

I'm puzzled why they shelled out on refurbed Sl1200 mk2 when the new Technics decks would cost little more. Living Voice appear to be specialising in big systems now - apparently for millionaires yachts. Never can get the liking for horns but at least they went JBL and solid state for bass. Would love to know where you can get those large drivers these days.
