In the early 80s, as well as the PT, the LP12 was in direct competition with rivals including decks from Dunlop, Logic and JBE. The general consensus on the Internet is that these newer designs were superior to the LP12. However, the Glasgow mafia ensured that the LP12 went from strength to strength because of their control over reviewers and Ivor’s storm troopers putting pressure on dealers.

Bollocks dsjr , what changed ,don't give me your opinion which I have less and less respect for as time goes on and give me facts . What changed ?

the bearing , platter, subchasis , have not changed ,that leaves the top plate , the lid and the plinth . Give it a rest .

You sold LP12'S over pt's , in my mind that makes you a criminal

didn't you work for Radford hifi ?

Best get off the bus old chap before you seriously drop yourself in it! Mind you, carry on as you do and all can see straight through your arrogant ignorance of the topic discussed and you become the forum idiot, which you seem to like to perpetrate!

I have set up a good few PT's in my time - I wouldn't have commented had I not a firm bed of experience to base my comments on - and the quality of the early ones is disgusting! The whole wishy-washy attitude of the company holds true to this day, with iffy quality control on the current product I've seen - Arthur admitted it was difficult. The company in its early days was a laughing stock and the whole 'Pink Triangle' connotation didn't help them one bit, although it never bothered me. There WAS a good product in there, but it took a long time for this to be fully realised.

Right. Back to work as I have some amps to make :D
Sadly you are still under the control of the Linn brainwash, yes PT had early production problems, most new companies with new products do. Sadly for us to see reality in Linns case they had that time when just supplying bits to Hamish, he went through the teething stage, they just stole the product after it had been through that.

WHAT IS FACT is Ivor decided, after discovering they were a bunch of gays, and proud of it and even promoting it, at the Heathrow show where PT was launched, that he would kill them off. So the production problems were hi-lighted to dealers and even the reps would show the problems to shop staff, pulling the company down anyway they could. YES PT were in some ways their own worst enemy, and didn't solve the production problems quickly enough, but imagine there are a bunch of saboteurs (Linn Reps) banging the platter up and down in shops to deliberately fracture the bearings and other tricks and you see what they were up against.

Reality was that given a working unsabotaged one, it PISSED ON A LINN FROM A GREAT HEIGHT MUSICALLY, as did most other turntables.

FFS wake up Dave, you keep nearly doing it, and then you just go back to being the old Dave, the flat earth retailer.

In 1980 I had a letter published in Popular Hi-Fi exposing some truths about the Glasgow mafia, I was not aware of the full picture at the time. Ivor was not pleased and they published his two page rebuttal, full of :Bllocks:

Links aren't working. Photobucket have problems at the moment. I would put them up at Tinypics, they are easy to use and no problems.

PT, Logic, Dunlop etc would have had more funds to dedicate to build improvements if their sales had not been stymied by Linn's tactics. The Townshend was superb in comparison to the Linn - I heard the Rock Reference.
