The Alphason arm is very sought after so that is the main attraction. Assume the cartridge is knackered and don't factor that into the price.
The asaka has recently been checked out by a specialist cartridge company - which one i don't know. So i assume it is in very good condition.

Although i know Les quite well having been a customer of his for 10 years (where did they go !) and visit from time to time he didn't offer it exclusively to me. I saw it on his facebook page and phoned him. I have bought it however  and had to get in quick
_D_S_J_R_ wrote: Sat Dec 09, 2017 11:11 am PT's CAN sound excellent, but build spoiled it for me at the time and they DID get better as they went along I remember. No reason why a well cared for example shouldn't be as good or better than when new though and I trust Les W. The arm is one of the very best of its type although it doesn't *look* it although I'm not keen on the Asaka, which could probably be flogged for a few hundred, but in such a good arm on a deck lacking bass-bloat it may be absolutely fine ;)

P.S. A good PT was always better than a 1980's LP12 as long as the system wasn't set up and optimised specifically for the Linn (you older ones will know what I mean), but for me, it was the Voyd decks which perfected the materials and techniques I thought and the PT (Vector?) interpretation of the concept was possibly similar although I have little experience of this.
Well Dave, i assume you mean Naim amps were optimised for the lp12 ? Didn't Les have something to do with Voyd ? I will give the asaka a go seeing as though it has already been checked over by a specialist cartridge company

And it just so happens i have a 1990 LP12 with Avondale Taps2, Rubikon subchasis, Aro and lyra argo to compare it to. I have some of Alfi's insole spring replacements and he is going to move the motor to 7 O'clock and supply me with one of his mats.

I also intend to get a 1970's japaneese direct drive of some sort and give all 3 of them a right good baking off (spanking) through my phono1, diy Avondale amps and diy 3 way isobaric semi omni's (that's a mouthful).

It seems i'm a splurgin'. :guiness; Well you only live once. Will see what other goodies Les has for sale when i visit him , his workshop is like a little toy shop full of all sorts of interesting things for us diyers. Last time i went over i ended up being there all day

He has a new fully complimentary power amp board out that i would like to see. Non of that quasi complimentary business

All happening here.....

Yeah, sure thing. Does it work with the Rock ? There was talk from Les about manufacturing the Taps2 again.

I think Fatpoopy uses an asaka. If he uses one then it must be the best cartridge in the world. Until his next massive u-turn that is

yes i heard through les's fbook page he was considering it,the rocks motor is the same generic one used on the lp12 so it should work fine.

The rocks motor can be upgraded for a price. For those that dont know,to a dc motor.

Will nearly be as good as a pt then. ;)

For me at the time, it was the SPEAKERS that really matched an 80's LP12. Fruity bass from the deck matched by speakers that didn't have much if any (AR18S, Wharfedale Diamonds, Kans, Rega Ela's, HB1's, Mission 70's and many more from this particular time to name but some), or if they did, it was very carefully controlled (Saras) or overdamped (Isobariks)!!! I'm exaggerating a bit, but hope you get the general idea...

The Decca is a strange old thing as discussed and it really does need a little tonearm damping as given by the likes of a Jelco 750 and Mission 774 for example. The later ones offering under 2g tracking force seem to have high LATERAL compliance, but little VERTICAL, and this is why I mentioned how my R200 made my Microscanner 'shimmy' side to side when entering the groove. Not sure the Zeta is going to fix this I'm afraid as it's so bloody massive, but you never know so good luck :D

Sometimes, old Supex-based Linn cartridges (Asak, Asaka (same innards, different bodies I believe) and the later design Karma and derived Troika) seem to be better than ever after a rebuild and retip. Troika's seem to come to life in a way they never did when new and both ESCo and Goldring seem to do a fantastic job with them (Linn used Goldring for years I believe). Interesting how Goldring do such a great job with other people's cartridges yet their own have always left loads to be desired, in my case anyway...
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

Ortofons are soulless and I'm afraid your judgement is tainted by 'newitis' ;)
