This may sound off-topic but bear with me.
I was in IKEA a couple of weeks back and heard one of the staff explaining that in some markets IKEA is seen as "Starter Home" territory and in others as an "aspirational brand". It would appear that Linn and Naim are pricing their products as "aspirational" despite their being closer to "starter" in terms of sound.

Have I missed something?

I think the logic behind a digital Phono stage is to target the super rich market who have already bought into the streaming system. A digital Phono stage will make analogue and the fruit box more attractive to them. Should the long standing brain washed want to "upgrade" all the better.

I now have got what Linn are up to with the digital phono stage. Looks like the idea is to enable the signal to remain digital if you have a complete Linn set up using a DS as your pre amp. This really isn't aimed at analogue purists I believe but those who want a top TT but have bought into the whole Linn system philosophy. Article in What Hi-Fi on Ulrika II and new Lingo.

The number of brainwashed old zombies following the "upgrade" path is dwindling so plan B comes into operation. 45 years on since Ivor stabed Hamish in the back and stole his flawed design.

The latest rip off is to offer the original fluted plinth as a limited edition no doubt at a premium. Only thing I ever liked about the design but for years it was just bog standard and what defined the old 'fruit box'.

I believe that the change to flat sides was one of the indicators of the new and far better plinth construction (motor area bolt addition and smaller holes on the main mounting blocks with countersinks on top to take the bolt fixing nuts). Maybe they have a 'retro' market now wanting the fluted bits back, but it's so bad to me that a (solid wood not veneered mdf) plinth costing probably sixty quid from the makers should retail for several hundred.. I'm so naïve where business ethics is concerned...

No reason why they could not retain the fluting with the superior plinth construction. Simple routing operation (just cosmetics). I think this might be inspired by a third party in the US that is doing them (no doubt for less money).
