Oh well, so much for that idea.

I slapped the SSD into the caddy and reformatted it to FAT32 so I could start with a "blank canvas" so to speak. I flashed Volumio to it using Etcher and then put the mini-PC back together again. The result was exactly the same, it's telling me it isn't seeing an OS. Plug the flash drive loaded with Volumio in and it boots first time.

Back to the drawing board.

If i remember correctly I had to play around in the BIOS settings and change the Primary boot sequence in Start Up option.

At the moment I'm not even being presented with an option to enter the BIOS (and I've pressed all of the usual suspects, and more besides) but even so, it should be set to boot from disk first. It's obviously not seeing Volumio as a bootable OS.

I just read through the entire thread and am even more confused. Somebody says they got it working by doing exactly what I did, somebody else explains why that won't work, and in the middle, they start talking about Macbooks, Debian, and CherryTrail and Baytrail SoCs whatever TF they are.

I need to forget about it for a couple of days and then come back to it. I'll play with my new Amazon Echo Wall Clock instead.

My streaming devices have always been connected to the BMU via an extension. Prompted by posts on this forum, today I thought I would see what the result would be if they were connected directly to the mains. I was in for a very pleasant surprise. The sound seemed to open up with the biggest improvements at the frequency extremes. I was not expecting this so I reconnected the devices to the BMU to check if my ears were deceiving me. They were not and now the sound was somewhat dull in comparison. It was not long before I changed back. The microRendu and Qutest are connected to MCRU PSs whilist the Mscaler uses the one supplied. I am very pleased and only wish I had tried this a lot sooner. I might have been put off because connecting my hub/router to the BMU earlier this year had the opposite effect, though only slight. My conclusion is that streaming devices connected to a BMU (connected to a DC blocker in my case) are not the best pairing.

Today I also thought I would give Volumo a try to see how it compares with BubbleUp. I downloaded the app to my Android phoee but it could not locate the network. Win some lose some.

Volumio app will be looking for devices running under the Volumio OS - do you have any in your system CN?

My guess is that equipment that has a transformer-based power supply will benefit from being run from a BMU, devices using switching PSU's will not.

Then, as a complete numpty about electronics. I wonder if switching power units utilise the AC cycle jump from 0 to +240 volts. When faced with a BMU- generated supply, the plus jump is only 120 volts - which would mean that things would be running on half power.

Or am I seeing this wrong?

I am even more of an electronics numpty than a computre numpty. I do not know what is going on but know I have poor mains from the difference the BMU made to my system, the adding of a DC blocker eliminating any buzzing. It seemed logical to assume that the sound of anything plugged into it would improve - WRONG.

I had a look at my streamers manual and there is no mention of Volumo, where there is of BubbleUp and other music apps. I don't know if updates are available. I will have a look to pass the lockdown boredom on what looks like a very rare wet day..
