Picked up one of their free comics whilst passing the York branch today. It has a bit more hifi content than usual and i noticed they now stock a few B&W products. That's a first i think

Yes it's a toy shop Bought my very first system from them as a spotty teenager. Marantz and wharfedale if i remember correctly.

I've bought some fairly serious kit from them. They do quite a bit of quality kit if you know what you are looking for. Not the boutique brands or those sold through a limited dealership. Some quite pricey models now in their own Cambridge line. Also their guarantees are second to none even for products were you have to pay extra. Free on TVs and some speakers. Dem facilities still seem a bit limited compared to specialist dealers. I would suggest purchase anything online and get 30 day statutory return period.

Pass is probably the wrong word though. I missed many a train home because of Julian Richer. I even had a pair of their own-brand (more like poorly home-made...) speakers. They were front-ported, and the port itself was a hacksawed section of brown PVC pipe.

I bought the Grado and Oppo headphones in my signature at Richer Sounds. On both occasions I was alowed plenty of time to compare different brands playing music stored on my phone with the DAC I brought along. My only gripe is that they would not let me audition the AQ DF Red because they insisted it is not compatable with a phone. Of course it is through UAPP. Audio T let me audition one and I ended up buying it there.

I remember when they had the original tiny Bristol shop round the corner from their present location. It was piled high and crammed tight with japanese (mostly end of line) products. I'm sure the variety of gear was larger than they do today. Bought an Hitachi FT 5500 tuner in there in the late 80s. Around £200 when retail was about £350.

Visited Richer Sounds in York today and came away with a Tangent CDII mini CD player for £149.
My Sony CDP930XB had gone to meet its maker and as the missus and me were in York on a coach trip, we decided it would be a good time to replace the shagged out Sony with something a bit more modern.

This little player has no programming, no display and is a black box with a slot on the front to take the CD. Controls are stop, pause, start, forward 1, back 1. You insert a CD and it plays: thats it! This is hair shirt CD playback taken to its absolute limits.

The amount of music that comes out of this black box is staggering considering the price. Richard would have approved.
Great service from the guys at the York branch goes without saying.
