Freedb no longer in operation

Unread post by Fretless »

If, like me, you regularly rip CD's using a program like Exact Audio Copy (EAC) then you may not be aware that the album and title metadata information that automatically gets pulled in comes from an online database called Freedb.

This no longer works. Freedb announced a while ago that they would be shutting down the service and it looks as if that has now happened.

Loading a CD in to EAC generates an error that the program cannot find the server.

But, despair not, EAC has an alternative source already built-in called CUETools Database (CTDB) which can be found in the metadata settings.

Now I can get on with ripping a couple of newly-arrived Journey discs.

Personally I always found EAC too slow at ripping so for a few years now I've used dBPoweramp which does the same job but quicker.

EAC does a lot of double-checking for accuracy. It can be set to reduce this and run faster.

DbPowerAmp is a great allround program. I use its format conversion tool a lot.

+1.

A right-click gets you an Explorer option to convert a file, what could be simpler? There are a ton of options beyond that, and the ability to set your own defaults. It's my "go-to" app for converting files to FLAC format, and it does a great job.
