Rega upgrades

Unread post by TheMarlin »

I have what once was a Rega Plannar 2, but has been heavily modded.

I’ve already changed the bearing and platter for Delrin units, and a miller billet aluminium sub player. Got them from Fidelity Designs. I replaced the arm with an AudioMods IV (still have the upgrades RB250 with upgrade Stub end, weight, and Michel VTA I’d anyone is interested.

I’m thinking of changing the motor to the 24v version. Anyone got any suggestions on this? Is Rega the only option, or are there other aftermarket products?

The only original part left is the ugly tired looking MDF plinth. Has anyone here tried any of the plinth upgrades on the market, such as the SRM Tech Azure or the Michael Lim plinth?

Before you say, sell it and get a proper turntable, i just want to have fun tweaking this thing to get the best from it. It’ll eventually go to my daughter (who has a stock Nad 533), and long term I’ll get a nicer turntable from further up the food-chain, but for now, I fancy experimenting. What upgrades do you recommend?

Anyone got plinth swap experience? Good or bad?

Cheers

I'd also like to know regarding the plinth, as my Rega RP6 sounds a little like yours, insomuch it is also a "triggers broom". Mine has the 24v motor on it and I got a Rega Neo PSU.. made a difference, less background noise and more stable with the speed adjustments. flutter and wow decreased also. I'd go for the 24v motor upgrade, for £135 it's a worthwhile investment. I'm awaiting the Tangospinner brass pulley as I'm fitting a dual belt system soon.

This is the Michael Lim platter. It’s acrylic, has a coloured skeletal support, and steel and alloy addition supports. I d heard some good things about it, but only from one person.

Landed cost (in the UK) for the platter, motor isolation, feet, skeleton (available in several colours), and supports is about £400.
He also offers a platter, it my Felton platter is superb quality, and not going anywhere.

Only one person has recommended it, was hoping for a wider sample.

I briefly went down the rega p6 modding rabbit hole, some years back. I found the groovetracer subplatter and delrin platter to be very good (but not cheap) and a double pulley system to be another lift in stability (think it was tangospinner). Ultimately, although these mods clearly increased the technical proficiency of the deck, it still left me wanting (a lot) more. If you sell it, convert it back to stock and sell the mods off separately to get more of your money back.

The Audiomods arms appear excellent...and decent value, btw. Far superior to the Rega going by the couple that I've heard.

My suggestion for a plinth upgrade would be one that had a Lenco or Garrard in. Sorry ;)

In the early 90’s, I had a Garrard 401 in slate plinth with various SME arms in it. I bought it off a friend for around £300. It was glorious, though I never liked the braking mechanism, it added noise to the platter.

A friend modified his with a voltage regulator, which I liked the aesthetics of.

I do plan to get something from further up the food chain, but right now, happy to muck about upgrading this deck before it goes up my daughter. It’s fun!

I asked my daughter if she wanted a turntable... she made subtle enquiries about my mental health ;)

I have a cartridge-less Planar 6 for sale at present if you did want to bypass the 'do it yourself' route and simply get the tt that already has all the logical upgrades (PSU/machined subplatter/duallayer platter etc.) that you can possibly do to the lower spec'ed models. :). Not advertised here yet so shoot me a PM if you're interested. I'm in Chester btw.

I recall having the same reaction with a CD player. Where those under 35 are concerned vinyl and CD are very much things of the past, similar to radiograms and 78s in my younger days.
