I've ordered the 'soundmaster MCD1700' for my dad. It looks compact and easy to use.

re: tape decks, I had a Yamaha cassette deck and before that a Nakamichi 480z (always wanted the dragon). Now if a tape is played it's with an old walkman or a tiny Alba boom box. The Yamaha deck was probably like yours karatestu, a KX----- model but I can't remember which. My first foray into cassettes was in the early 80's on my parents Waltham music centre, taping the top 40 pop songs. Adam and the Ants ! Happy days.

We must be around the same age Mr Ribbon as I was obsessed with Adam & the Ants. I got to see Adam Ant play live last summer and it was awesome.

My tape deck was a Richer Sounds special, and was £250 in the late 90's if I remember rightly. The mags were wetting themselves about it at the time but to be honest it is nothing special.

Oh dear me, what a palaver. End of last week and my dad decided to play records while i was there. good jazz sounds including the Dave Brubeck Quartet, take five etc. Sounds a little funny I thought so, asked dad what he heard. Sure enough we could both hear the same flutter, music out of time. Damn. At least the company emailed a free parcel label for returns.

So now I'm on the look out for a decent record player/amp/speaker set up that won't fall to bits after one week.

Received an Audio Technica record player today and my dad is currently listening to his fave records again. The deck has an in built MM phono stage and is a quality automatic with decent straight arm and removable headshell. Cartridge included.
It's running through his JVC mini system with single driver speakers and it sounds pretty good. And even though the only input is a line level 3.5mm it is working well so far.
