Last night a the proms

Unread post by Ordinaryman »

Did anyone else watch this, maybe some of you? Just to say (I'm no classical aficionado) BUT Sibelius "impromptu for strings) and especially Vaughn Williams "The lark ascending" could convince me, especially when played by Nicola Benedetti. Absolutely glorious!

I watched, and mostly enjoyed it. I'm not sure how the Women's Institute (W.I.) would get on singing that "revised" version of Jerusalem though.

I'd never heard of Golda Schultz before last night, but what a voice, and I'll listen to Nicola Benedetti anywhere, any time, playing pretty much anything. :violin:

The premiere of "Solus" seemed to have finished almost as soon as it had begun, but didn't altogether suck.

You're right about the Sibelius, that was superb, and The Fantasia on British Sea-Songs was loads of fun, as were the short visits to all four corners of the Union.

The icing on the cake for me was "You'll Never Walk Alone," (I normally hate show tunes sung by opera singers) which was treated with sensitivity. Maybe Goldie is a Liverpool fan too.

I'd say the BBC pulled "Last Night..." off quite well after all the argy-bargy.

I didn't watch it but I really enjoyed last Friday's performance with Anoushka Shankar.

I might watch the last night on iPlayer as Vaughan Williams is my favourite classical composer.
