During my current trawl through 80's/90's jazz-rock bands I came across Opafire, a short-lived West-Coast-USA outfit who released a trio of albums before splitting - apparently because they were unhappy about being labelled 'Smooth Jazz' by a radio station.

I was intrigued by comparisons to Shadowfax and the fact that Fretless-Bass-God Michael Manring was a part of the project. To my pleasant surprise I have been able to pick up all three of their CD's for peanuts and am rather enjoying them.

Musically, the group reside in a zone bordered by Jazz-fusion, World Music and Soft Rock. There are definite stylistic links to Shadowfax: the playing is impeccable, the recording quality is absolutely superb and there is a pleasant openness to the overall sound. Different is the slightly less-rock, more-jazz approach with a pronounced, laid-back LA feel and a much heavier dose of World Music vibes.

In 30+ degrees of sweltering heat (now for more than a week) this music is a perfect soundtrack to relax to. 8-)
