I think I know just what you mean. Roger Chapman Mango Crazy the bass guitar is revealed as a synth on top of bass.

Third Coast Kings on vinyl

Not the greatest pressings ever. And I felt that what I was hearing was in need of a bit of sonic windows cleaning - I have stuff on digital source which I felt was a little clearer, sharper and more up to the beat - I rather got the impression on a lot of the tracks that the band were slowing down or playing slightly behind the beat.

After an hour or so of funk, I was ready for something a little more melliflous and so

[BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBPnfgg20p0[/BBvideo]

Ripped from CD and so 16 bit 44.1 khz

This is an album I've listened to a lot but not recently and my system has changed. The mix sounds a bit different to what I remember but that's probably down to the change in speaker cable and possibly the BMU bring our the musical context rather more, but why has Alison's voice now got a slightly grainy, harsh quality which I'm sure wasn't there before. I'm playing on a slightly different Raspberry Pi and Dac but I haven't heard much difference between Pis and Dacs previously. So I try

Something of an earworm at the moment and 24 bit 192 khz. No graininess here.

This is where I'm really hoping I'm codding myself, or there's something not quite right with the Pi. Previously I didn't hear much of a difference between different digital formats and would argue that musical enjoyment is much more about how the album is put together but If I'm now hearing difference based on digital format and particularly if this means music I've previously really enjoyed isn't quite what it was, then I'm not sure what to do.

How is the Pi hooked up to the DAC. USB? Are you hearing jitter, a sort of veil in the signal.
24 bit uses considerably more digital bandwidth than 16, maybe the processor is having to work harder.

Currently listening to Future Radio (volunteer run community project in Norwich).

http://futureradio.co.uk/station/schedule/

Perfect Sunday morning fare. The 'Blues & Roots' show, followed by 'Easy Vibes' (Ska, Mento, Calypso etc).

Plenty more eclectic music shows throughout the week. No connection etc.

Internet radio seems to be far better in every way than UK DAB and what's left of the once great FM service.

Out doing urgent shopping and had Aes Dana 'Season 5' playing in the car. Lovely gentle EM for a Sunday morning.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...The time has gone, The song is over, Thought I'd something more to say...

Neither use USB.

1 is a Raspberry Pi B with a HifiBerryDac connected via SSP
2 is a RespberryPi B+ with an IQAudio DAC card connected via SP.

I also have a Raspberry Pi B with an IQAudio card. When I put that against the first config I concluded that any difference I heard between them was probably down to the interconnect. (Having adjusted the IQAudio card for volume - by default it plays louder than the HifiBerry Card.

Both Dac cards use the same chip. Both are running Volumio (1.41 and 1.51 respectively). Since I was listening through 1.51 on the B+ it is possible that what I heard is a software based issue - it's a very recent release of the software and there are issues with it.

(Note to self: I really must try the Pi through USB and an external DAC - it's the way most people seem to do it.)

Could be your setup is now so transparent you hear the weaknesses in the original recording.
