Miles Davis 'Miles in the Sky'

Image

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abzjkAGT_VI

An intriguing, underrated/understated 1968 release that opens with the (for the time) unusual use of Herbie Hancock's electric piano and rock-driven rhythms. This is the album that clearly points the way to the following year's 'In a Silent Way' where Miles created the Fusion genre and where the styles experimented-with here would come to fruition.

George Benson guests with some very tasty guitar-work on track 2. Overall this is a highly accessible album with a pleasing melodic flow and non-challenging, mainstream feel.

Currently delving into the murky, impenetrable depths of Miles's 'difficult' early 70's electric phase which is a mind-bending mix of free-form Psychedelic Rock, Funk, studio experimentation .... and some Jazz (but not much).

It's a wild ride, man. :banana-tux:

Return To Forever 'Jazz Workshop Boston 1973'

Image

Fascinating live release from RTF just before they recorded the breakthrough LP 'Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy'. Stanley Clarke is here discovering the possibilities of electric bass and there is a 31-minute workout called 'Sometime Ago'.

The recording is a bit rough but still hugely enjoyable.
