In total contrast to the Pogues:

At the beginning of the 80's we were temporarily relocated to Hong Kong, where I was exposed to large doses of American and Aussie AOR. From time to time the urge just grabs me to get them back out and boogie!

From 1981, one-hit wonders 'Quarterflash' with their 'Harden My Heart'. Actually this is a very fine albums with hardly a weak moment - led by singer / saxophonist Rindy Ross. Check out the raunchy guitar solo on track 2 'Find Another Fool', if you listen closely you'll hear that it's a violin.

Now, where were those Heart albums ... 'Barracuda', it's headbanging time. :music-rockout:

I was going to put on "The Songs of Leonard Cohen" but the gas oven was a bit too handy :-?

Chilling with a bit of Debussy instead.

Youtube: U.K. - Danger Money (Full Album - Remaster)

U.K. - Danger Money

This one has been evading me for years, still have it on LP but was wanting a CD copy that wasn't a ridiculously-priced Japanese import. Well, I finally found a reasonably-priced Japanese import. Special master-tape to DSD transfer, sounds gorgeous!

From the ashes of King Crimson arose U.K. ('United Kingdom'). Bill Bruford and John Wetton had attempted to form a new supergroup (a la ELP) with Rick Wakeman - but that didn't work out. So they recruited master guitarist Allan Holdsworth and the young Eddie Jobson (only 22 and already a veteran of Curved Air, Roxy Music and Frank Zappa) on violin and keyboards. This lineup recorded one album but disagreed on direction, so Bruford and Holdsworth went to form the jazz-rock outfit 'Bruford' whilst ex-Zappa drummer Terry Bozzio was pulled in to record 'Danger Money'.

The second record is more song-orientated than its mainly-instrumental predecessor and is dominated by, for me, the best vocal performances that Wetton ever gave (I was a huge fan of his - Hell, I wanted to BE John Wetton). Here you get the album that links the dark sonic attack of King Crimson with the accessible pomp-pop of Asia. Crimson fans should listen to 'Caesar's Palace Blues' and 'Carrying No Cross' and imagine Fripp blasting away in the background. One song 'Rendezvous 6.02', comes around on the radio in Holland from time to time - it was quite a big hit over here.

This trio did a final live album and split, Wetton to Asia, Jobson to Jethro Tull and Yes (briefly), Bozzio to Missing Persons. A massive 16-disc compilation box has recently been released featuring just about every note the band ever played.

Listening to a lot of British Jazz from the mid-'60s to mid-'70s: a truly wonderful period for the genre, where it really found its voice as something altogether different to the US variant. Explore Neil Ardley (and the New Jazz Orchestra); Mike Westbrook; Mike Gibbs; Ian Carr (and Nucleus); Tubby Hayes; Stan Tracey - and a host more. Here's a few to get you started:
