Kim Carnes - 'Voyeur'

Image

Youtube: Kim Carnes - Voyeur (videoclip)

For those who like that sort of thing (I do), Kim Carnes had an enormous worldwide hit with the soft-rock anthem 'Bette Davis Eyes' and then never quite managed to get another. The stunning album 'Mistaken Identity' was followed up by 1982's 'Voyeur' which repeated the same mix of AOR, synth-pop and Kim's raw C&W vocal styings that, oddly enough, work absolutely wonderfully together.

Played this to death, still love it.

Today's listen is an album that I will be amazed if anyone has heard (of) it.

Youtube: Models - Cut Lunch (the mini video disc)

Around 1980 there was a short-lived 'Aussie invasion' in the pop charts with bands like: Split Enz, Crowded House, Men at Work, Mental as Anything, The Church, The Chills, The Birthday Party. One bunch of hopefuls from Melbourne called themselves 'Models' and had a punky, synth-based sound with a large dose of wacky humour. Imagine Madness being locked up in Ultravox's studio with a crate of lager.

Models came to the UK to make their second album 'Local and/or General' but returned down under when success eluded them. Perhaps their crowning moment was an EP called 'Cut Lunch' which perfectly encapsulates their quirky but infectious sound.

Somehow I acquired both the LPs and the 10" EP from bargain bins. Vanished now - might even be worth something as collectors items.

Currently listening to Danny Wilson's debut from 1987, "Meet Danny Wilson"

Forgot how good this is. Intelligent songwriting from start to finish, catchy hooks and well produced.
Sounds like the day ABC met Steely Dan.
Somebody’s telling me the latest scandals.
Somebody’s stepping on my plastic sandals. Joe Jackson (1979)
