Exquisite, magical and unique.

Dhafer Youssef 'Birds Requiem' (2014)

Image

Dhafer Youssef has been on my radar since his 1999 album 'Malak'. He is a master of the Oud - an Arabic instrument somewhat similar to a lute - and his vocal range is just astonishing. His music combines the mysticism of the Islamic tradition with contemporary jazz inflections to produce a truly wonderful sound.

On 'Birds Requiem' he joins forces with Norway's trumpet wizard Nils Petter Molvaer to create an album that simply defines the concept of atmospheric beauty.

If anyone ever asks you to let them hear something amazing, then put this on.

Return to Forever 'Live - The Complete Concert' (1978)

Image

Stunning double-CD set from seminal Jazz-fusion-rock outfit led by Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke.

Extended workouts that are so funky they get can still me grooving even after a couple of long work-days.
