My old dounle bass teacher, Yorkshireman Ernie Ineson actually played with Deep Purple on the 'live' Deep Purple Concerto for Group and Orchestra recording at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969. I had the original album at one time.
I remember him telling me in a lesson just after the recording, that the group was that loud he was worried that his very expensive double bass would be shaken apart! Even more amazing to Ernie was that whilst sat with the group members in the bar, he witnessed one of the group drop some change on the floor and not bother picking it up! (It makes me wonder if Ernie picked it up once they had left!?).
Not putting the musicians in the group down, Ernie reckoned that they had a lot of help composing the Concerto from Malcolm Arnold. Still all very fine musicians.

Just a snippet.
