Am glad I saw the Stranglers a couple of years ago and also UFO shortly before Paul Raymond's passing. Can 't help thinking about who might not be around when this pandemic nightmare is over.

RIP Phil May

The Pretty Things vocalist Phil May has died.

The legendary group emerged from the British R&B boom, with their frenzied take on the blues attracting wild audiences.

Famously wearing their hair longer than the Rolling Stones, the band moved from quicksilver rhythm 'n' blues to proto garage punk, before exploding in the psychedelic day-dream of 'SF Sorrow'.

Arguably rock's first true conceptual statement, 'SF Sorrow' was followed by a lengthy move into hard rock as the 70s dawned.

Writing, touring, and recording almost to the end, Phil May led The Pretty Things from start to finish - sadly, his family have confirmed that the seminal vocalist has died.

A statement reads: "Phil May passed away at 7.05am on Friday 15 May at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. He was 75. He had been locked down in Norfolk with his family and, during the week Phil had suffered a fall from his bike and had undergone emergency hip surgery, after which complications set in."

It continues: "Phil had been in poor health for some time when the Pretty Things played their last live concert, ‘The Final Bow’, on 13 December 2018 at the Indigo, O2 where they were joined onstage by old friends David Gilmour and Van Morrison."

Terribly sad news - our thoughts are with his family and friends.

The Pretty Things influenced a lot of good bands and artists. I first became aware of them when I bought Bowie's covers Pinups album on the day of release in 73.

One of my first musical heroes, I have always had a real soft spot for The Pretty Things from the 60's, and their album from 1999 Rage Before Beauty is an absolute belter, right up there in my all time top 10. I shall be playing that tonight in tribute. RIP.

Steve Priest of The Sweet. Shocked and saddened. A very influential band and now Andy Scot is the only original surviving member.

So sad about Steve Priest. He was ill for some time, but at the end of March, his family said he was "on the road to recovery," so this is a bit of a shock. The Sweet got labelled as a teeny-bopper pop band, but their albums (and some of their B sides) belie that opinion. They could rock.

The Sweet were a big influence on NWOBHM. The Sweet FA and Give us a wink albums are big favourites of mine. There was a lot more to them than the hit singles and regular appearances on Top Of The Pops.
