TANGERINE DREAM - RUBYCON 2016

Well my copy of Tangerine Dream - Quantum Gate arrived yesterday and I can only say this is a fabulous recording of great music. Unfortunately I am only able to listen to this the once since my cartridge is going away today for a check up and possible re-tipping. Ordered TD - Particles a couple of days ago.

Wot, no free download ?? Shame.

Currently wading through TD's 90's & 00's output - there is a lot of good music in there.
Planning to post an overview shortly.

Well, Rubycon 2016 builds on Rubycon 2010 and extends it, but it's too 'clinically clean and digital' for me I'm afraid. Currently playing the original as I type and this is too deeply burned into my psyche - and I'm having to stop typing as the sequencer works its magic all over again... Sorry, bad fidelity or not, the original is incomparable and moves me every time I play it. The sequencer in Part 2 is just simplifying and fading into an echo of itself, the phased waves washing round my head as the beautiful deep chords fade away...

I said elsewhere recently that I want a T.O.N.T.O., all two Moog IIIC's, two ARP2600's, various Oberheim and Serge bits and bobs, the wondrously all-enveloping curved cabinets to house it all and the custom controller that helps it all to work as a whole if needs be.. What you could do with a sequencer driving several oscillators all at once to get that gorgeous fat organic bass sound - a demo Artera Moog software ain't the same somehow - and I made a recording of both home 'programmed' Rubycon sequences done on my old PC ten years or more ago with heavily filtered 'demo' noise burts too - found the files recently and winced ....... If I'd learned to play a keyboard properly............

Speaking of T.O.N.T.O. - Zero Time is another all time favourite. These guys could PLAY.. Add some hippy era uplifting spirituality which has grown with me over the years and Riversong as well as Timewhys has never sounded, or made me 'feel' as better as it does now.....

I was brought up with the attitude of 'if you don't have something good to say - then don't say anything'. However there are moments when you have to make an exception.

Jean-Michel Jarre 'Equinoxe Infinity'



Rumours of JMJ hiding away in a studio full of vintage 70's synths have been circulating and expectations were high. So then comes 'The sequel album to the original Equinoxe'.

Feverishly running to the nearest CD player, I get the disc spinning. What comes out of the speakers is not what I had hoped for. First impression is that it is more of a rehash of 'Chronology' and 'Revolutions' - not his strongest works. 'Equinoxe' itself is a masterpiece of mood and drama, two words that cannot be applied to this follow-up.

On the positive side : this IS new music from JMJ the maestro. Polished, layered EM with the noises and effects that characterise his sound. There are (very) good sections and it is an enjoyable listen. Furthermore Jarre is using a new noise reduction system called the FiDef Algorithm and the SQ is crystal clear and a treat for the ears. He has used the same processing for the recent 'Planet Jarre' compilation so I might have to get hold of that.

To sum up: a good album for JMJ fans, but it ain't Equinoxe.

Everything after "Zoolook" sucks.

There are hundreds of electronic artists out there with cds. Why not look into them? - instead of the big Three always.

The reason there are hundreds, is that this music is so feckin' easy to make. (Same reason why there are so many prog bands making like Hawkwind, but less than a handful making like early King Crimson.)



Myself, Blind Child stays away from the ambient and rather chooses Berlin-school wannabees.
