There were a number of competent Grunge bands in the 90's - nothing too original but My Bloody Valentine were exceptional as were the Pixies (though technically these bands actually formed in the 80's)
In the 90's, the music business was probably at it zenith for greed fuelled paranoid short sightedness - what with home taping "killing music" in the 80s being followed in the 90s with the fear of the unknown entity known as the internet. This created a blockage for new artists....but there are always great bands around.
The internet is beautiful in as much as it allows any creative person to put their music "out there" without greedy middlemen - but you still need to search for it. I am fortunate were I live in that we have a good independent record shop that acts as a hub for local bands, even having a section for local bands to put their CDs and now also vinyl in for people to try

Re: The 90's - a decade of crap music or what?
I miss hunting through bargain racks for interesting new albums. 10 years ago there were at least 8 record shops in the nearby towns, now they are all gone. Luckily there are good internet mail-order stores in abundance.
I was a Pixies fan back in the 80's, 'Surfer Rosa' was great. Along with bands like: Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Band of Susans, Meat Puppets, Live Skull, Etc.etc. I thought grunge was a bit tame after those groups.

Copperblue - fine lp....and also a lovely oxidation effect of Copper (technically more green)
NME record of the year in 1992
Sugar we're one of the loudest bands I have seen. Bob Mould generally excellent if you like noise and melody combined

Re: The 90's - a decade of crap music or what?
The 90's were an incredible decade for me, and not totally in a positive way (losing my mother for one thing). Music? Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Ozric Tentacles, Jerry Burns, Enya, The Orb, Seal, Annie Lennox, George Michael and a whole host of 'ambient' artists that still get played so much now. I also started an interest in Be-Bop? style Jazz.

Re: The 90's - a decade of crap music or what?
every decade has it's pros and cons. i started getting interested in music in the mid to late eighties and though i have mined the seam i think i have very few records from the 60's and 70's. late 70's is where it started getting interesting, after punk and with the advent of elctronic music. the 90's gave us spiderland (slint), giant steps (boo radleys) F♯ A♯ ∞ (gybe) and goo (sonic youth). it gave us painless (yo la tengo) and loveless (mbv). shit the 90's was great and there is great music being released today. the best music is yet to be written as far as i am concerned. as ever, music is about personal choice, i would rather poke needles in my ears then listen to endless wanky prog rock solo's.
Re: The 90's - a decade of crap music or what?
I thought I just did... About grunge, I did like Nirvana and Alice in Chains. But it forced metal music to margin for whole decade and that was not funny at all. And then came eurodance... Dj bobo, aqua and many more just trying to follow the wave and cash in and just copying each other on the way to the bank...
