Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
I've always though record two of Ariel was very prog but KB is not progressive rock. Same goes for most of that list.

Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
Progressive rock, also known as prog rock or prog, is a rock music subgenre that originated in the United Kingdom with further developments in Germany, Italy, and France, throughout the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s. It developed from psychedelic rock, and originated as an attempt to give greater artistic weight and credibility to rock music. Bands abandoned the short pop single in favor of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz or classical music in an effort to give rock music the same level of musical sophistication and critical respect.

Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE prog. And the unusual albums on that last list (Air, Sigur Ros, Flaming Lips) are all brilliant and totally original.
Maybe Progressive is a catch-all term for albums that are otherwise uncategorisable.

Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
I don't object to these bands but to me they aren't prog. I think they are stretching the definition to include anything that may be prog or psych influenced but most is electronic or alternative rock. I think that is because there is a lack of mainstream modern bands that actually play prog rock.

Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
Quite agree there, I do think that most 'Post-Rock' acts could be regarded as Prog. The likes of Mogwai, SigurRos, Explosions in the Sky. These do, for me, represent a continuation of the Prog idiom. The Flaming Lips come more out of an experimental psychedelic corner and are wacky in the same way that many 70's Krautrock acts were (Faust, Nektar).
Air and Kate Bush are both more pop-orientated, but the level of musicianship and production puts them right up there with the quality that will appeal to the Prog audience.

Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
Easy definition of Prog-rock:
Those who like it, like it,
Those who don't, don't.
Those who like it, like it,
Those who don't, don't.

Re: New Prog Rock Chart.
The reason Prog appears on the surface to becoming more in vogue lately is that some younger people are bored to hell with the banal pap being churned out over the radio waves and the dismal covers spewed out by X-Factor contestants. I was recently at a Big Big Train gig in London and when i chatted with some youngsters in the bar afterwards i asked what had brought them there and they confirmed my theory. They had grown tired of mainstream music and started to via away from it via bands like Elbow. Having heard Big Big Train on an internet radio station they were smitten. This has lead them to look at websites like mine and many others in search of other Prog diamonds.
Good to hear another view similar to mine with regards to Prog magazine. A publication exploiting many fans and musicians alike. Glossy fodder of repeated tripe. Stories like that of Genesis, Pink Floyd, E.L.P. Yes, King Crimson et al that have been published over and over again at the expense of multi talented bands and individuals more in need of the exposure than established legends who are without doubt the innovators and origins of the genre and can now live their celebrity and enjoy their autumn years on the fruits of their back catalogue. I'm afraid i see the formulation of a Prog chart as a bit too little a bit too late and the irritating dissenters of great music recorded and performed by great musicians has historically been scoffed at by the establishment and it's followers made to feel uncool. Charts are divisive and to such a genre as Prog inappropriate and totally unnecessary. It isn't something new, it was done by Melody Maker back in the 70's with their annual poll. That's all i'm gonna say about that
