Lyrics - the bad and the mad

Unread post by terrybooth »

For some reason a couple of groups popped back into my head the other day. Both from my immediate post Cream era. One was Blue Cheer - a Rock Band - the other was East of Eden and their first album, Mercator Projected.

Now the only think I remember about the latter was that it had a track on called Centaur Woman - and specifically because of the lyrics (which I didn't usually listen to too closely).

They are

Centaur woman she got human form
But her face is like a unicorn
Centaur lady in reverse
Lovely body but a face like a horse
(Chorus)
When she walks she trails her tail behind
When I kiss her she's a porcupine
When we eat I order steak flambe
But she's waiting for a bale of hay

And here it is - go to track 4

So how about it, what are your mad and bad lyrics?

Mad is Arthur Lee ('Live and Let Live')

'Oh, the snot has caked against my pants
It has turned into crystal
There's a bluebird sitting on a branch
I guess I'll take my pistol'

Bad is Alex Chilton 'Hey Little Child'

Oh, you're a pretty little thing
someone must have been nice to you
oh, walking down the lane
coming back from the catholic school

hey, hey, hey, hey

Oh, little fool
are you learning anything in school
maybe you might drop out
maybe travel somewhere down south

hey, hey, hey, hey
little child
little child

Plaid skirt, flannel vest
silly nubiles are the best
now you look so forlorn
passing by in your uniform

hey, hey, hey
little child
little child

hey
sacred heart
hey
little child

This was a music hall song revived by Ginger Baker. The Bonzos came from a trad jazz background early career (The Albert's, The Temperance Seven) and redid a lot of earlier music mostly published as sheet music, some made it to shellac, with silly lyrics (eg My brother makes the noises for the talkies). But which lyrics do you thinks of as bad or mad?

PROCOL HARUM from one of the darkest 70s lps, "Home":

"Still There'll Be More"

I'll bathe my eyes in a river of salt
I'll grow myself right up to the sky
I'll sing in the forest, tear down the trees
I'll foul all the fountains and trample the leaves
I'll blacken your Christmas and piss on your door
You'll cry out for mercy, but still there'll be more
I'll put a blight in the orchard
I'll run wild through the fields
I'll waylay your daughter and kidnap your wife
Savage her sexless and burn out her eyes
I'll blacken your Christmas and piss on your door
You'll cry out for mercy, but still there'll be more

PATERNOSTER "SAME" (aUSTRIAN kRAUTROCK)

jULIAN cOPE WRITES:
Lyrics that are so morbidly depressing and tinged with the nihilism of absurdity that they'd send Ozzy limping home with a tear in his eye. Vocalist Franz Wippel howls: "Rooms of darkness without colours/ceiling press you down on the floor/tableware filled up with vomit/lepers freaks and cross eyed traitors/jumping round the bathroom door..."

Prog is full of misery, madness and suicide lyric.

I would challange anyone to name more songs than I can , but the challange won't even be taken up cos audiofool's are not exactly the most seasoned of ACTUAL COLLECTORS.

Terry: you used the safe word "bad" when ,in fact, you wanted to use the word "filthy".

Even so, I posit that you set this thread up specifically to get me into a banning situation.

........................
For those that want an example of the harder lyric, go to my post ( just entered) called " Frank Sinatra: wot a cozy joke!" at Snakeoilaudio forum.
