Is Prog a bunch of self indulgent nonsense

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

Or is it a genuine music genre, or just a construct for the satisfaction and willy waving of self appointed experts.

FWIW, I think it is a genre, because before prog, there wasn't prog.
It's a perfectly valid form of musical expression and I certainly like it in small doses.
For example, "And You And I" by Yes and "Lunar Sea" by Camel, or "Golf Girl" by Caravan are all great compositions in isolation, but I couldn't listen to a whole album from any of those artists. I tried in the 70s and I've tried recently, but my attention span for prog hasn't gotten any longer; I'm more of a R&B fan meself.

Even I - a hard-core Prog fan- have been trying to avoid using the 'P' word for a while.

But I like it !

Been a prog fan for too many years, although I will agree some of it can be willy waving, but when you've got why not show it off, oh and I don't mean their willies

Its not just prog that can be guilty of self indulgence. Guitarist (in several genres) in particular are prone (IMHO) to cross the line between music and indulgence. But its very subjective, I know a lot of the music I listen to could be accused.

OK for what its worth I would say the defining moment for "Prog" was the release of King Crimsons - In the Court of the Crimson King. Whatever anyone thinks it is a great album with some very good music on it. A number of other bands took the concept of long musical rock compositions and entwined that with aspects of classical style and composition, obvious examples are Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Yes. Pink Floyd who originated from the Psychedelic Rock genre in the late 60's moved towards the Prog concept, albums they produced in the late 60's and early 70's clearly being of the genre. We also need to mention Jethro Tull who were also classed as Prog exponents but who incorporated a folk style and feel. Then there is also The Alan Parsons Project - however the music from them is generally is easier to listen to, so one could call it "Soft Prog"
