There are many pieces of music by King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Camel, Caravan, PFM, Jethro Tull, etc that move me. To some who fail to appreciate more complex music, they may call it self indulgent nonsense. But I just call it music that I enjoy...labels be damned. The same reason that I enjoy music by Mahler, Wagner, Vivaldi, and Mozart. And there are times when I just need to put on some Carpenters or James Taylor. It's all about what moves me.

Now...Punk Rock...that truly was Self Indulgent Nonsense"!

what if it's just a bit of music, played by people, and an arse (usually some self professed musical expert) decided to give it a name, somewhat similar to the way people were told Jap kit is crap? if you like it, enjoy it.

You are all referring to prog from the 70's. I accept some of it was quite self-indulgent, but not all. Anyway, things have moved on quite a bit. Anyone else tried the likes of Steven Wilson, Pineapple Thief, or Airbag?

From my POV, I guess it is a genuine music genre and of little interest to my tastes, but some appear to like it (Flatty and the YAWNER for example).

I'm a blues, jazz and classic (baroque) lover. If the blues doesn't get you moved, I guess nuthin' will

I'm quite fond of self-indulgent nonsense, and anyone who reads my posts will probably back me up on that.

I have two prog-like albums (Lizard by King Crimson and Aqualung by Jethro Tull) but never listen to either any more. If I want complicated, I listen to jazz or classical; if I want simple, I listen to the blues or punk rock.

Genre definitions are tricky: Siouxsie and the Banshees started out as Punk, went New Wave, became Goth and are now seen as a pop group. Same story for The Cure.

The Eagles are best known for a Reggae number (Hotel California) and the Stranglers 'Golden Brown' is a waltz. :o

I think that Great Music is Great Music and What You Like is What You Like. This evening I have Killing Joke and Spock's Beard lined up for a listen. Might chuck in a little Joni Mitchell just to spice things up a bit.
