Music Circle

Unread post by Simon Hickie »

Some mates and I have been operating a music & hifi circle for pretty well 10 years now whereby we visit each other about once a month to inflict a programme of music on the others along with any hifi upgrades, tweaks etc.

One of our number has an obsessive dislike of Genesis, another English folk, me jazz etc. etc. Last night's offering included Chantel McGregor, Band of Skulls, Cult, Troy Redfern, Laurence Jones and Garbage. I didn't like much of it, although Chantel McGregor was OK in part.

It's my turn next! I'm the only one who puts together a classical programme from time to time which in fact seems to go down pretty well. Whilst a programme based around Genesis and English folk is appealing, retaliation could be quite brutal. I'm currently minded to go for a 'bedsit' themed evening featuring classic bedsitter albums. On the list so far are:

Carole King - Tapestry
Don Mclean - American Pie
James Taylor - Sweet Baby James

I would of course include some of the late great Leonard Cohen, but I've played him before and I'm featuring artists we've not had over the last 10 years. I need to put together about two and a quarter hours, featuring about six artists.

Any suggestions would be most welcome (ideally good recording quality too).

After you have excommunicated your moronic friend. Swap American pie for empty chairs and crossroads (same albumn) play all the first side of Steve mcqueen and at least 4 songs from workers playtime.

If I could get away with it, I'd just play Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England (last named now playing). Retribution would be brutal though, and he has some big ATC SCM40 beasties which make my ears bleed.

A bit of classic "bedsit" music you say? You've got to get a bit of Nick Drake in there I would suggest, Bryter Layter maybe?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Nick Drake is indeed on the radar as is Suzanne Vega. I'd include Bowie & Reed, but I've had them on a previous night.

I'm trying to remember what I played a lot of as a student (tricky...) and it was mainly prog & classical.

Suzanne Vega is music to slit your wrists by but if that's what you want - go for it.

For music that will respond to a better system, I've found Sade excellent. There is detail that is hidden in there that comes out more and more as the replay system improves but it is still very enjoyable on lesser systems. Most any of her albums would do but Diamond Life is probably best known.

Enjoy!
Blusound Vault 2, P50SA, A80's, BMU, TIS, LS7, MA PL200, Meridian 506 (18 bit).

And Leonard Cohen, but I've used him already. For those who like female singer songwriters, I've very much enjoyed listening to Sarah Blasko, Susanne Sundfor, Sharon van Etten and Agnes Obel. Kari Bremnes is also excellent. All have featured on previous nights though. Some Joan Armatrading will probably feature this time round. I thought of including some Chris Isaac too - generally pretty depressing but well recorded.
