I have been buying these over the past year or two based on the superiority of the old 12" single. Usually they are expensive audiophile labels but quite a few regular releases have come out on 45 rpm vinyl in recent years.

Recommendations.

Nigel Lives , Murray Head (Intervention Records). Cut at 45 rpm to preserve dynamic range. This must have the widest dynamic range of any rock recording - better than Tea For The Tillerman. Hard to get in UK due to only US distribution.

Judee Sill, Self titled and Heart Food. (Intervention Records). Spectacularly great singer songwriter music and recording. Should have sold better. Intervention are doing some great titles.

Tea For the Tillerman, Cat Stevens. (Analogue Productions). Just the best ever pressing of this album (much better than AP's 33 rpm version).

Santana , Self titled. (MFSL). Arguably better than Abraxas. This version is stellar sounding especially percussion.

Brothers In Arms, Dire Straits, (MFSL). Yes it's 16 bit digital but this is best you are going to hear it.

Bob Dylan, various titles (MFSL). Best stereo versions by far of classic 60's albums. They are now doing the mono editions as well.

Love, Forever Changes (MFSL). At last the 45 rpm format allows this difficult to cut album to sound really great.

Also more mainstream 45 rpm releases from Universal (half speed masters) of Eno (first 4 rock albums) and Abba (Arrival/ The Album) catalogues and Peter Gabriel titles from Real World Records (SO and US in particular).

These records will show how capable your vinyl front end is.

I can remember some 80's releases done this way for better SQ.

The Enid - 'The Spell' and Klaus Schulze 'Trancefer' come to mind.

I have a couple of Music Matters Blue Note reissues on 2 x 45 rpm discs. Very, very good but the 33s are very acceptable in their own right.

The original album is a double LP at 33 rpm. The new version is a triple LP at 45 rpm.
