Us "bedroom musicians" don't often have a choice but to use programmed drums. A lot of the software these days can "humanise" the drums to some extent, but it still ain't a 'proper' drummer. In fairness though, the software used turns up on time, doesn't get drunk, doesn't make the rest of the band carry, help set up and break down its gear, tends not to speed up during the rock numbers it enjoys playing a bit too much...

Good drummers don't speed up. Get one that does then stick a click track on (or get another drummer). Practising to a click is what builds up good time keeping along with technique, knowing where you are in the bar and obviously time behind the kit.
