I Tried So hard Bands you've tried to get, but just don't

Unread post by Grumpytim »

OK first off this isn't a thread to slag off this, or that band, there are plenty of those on the interweb.

What I'm interested in is bands that given your tastes you really ought to like, but for some reason they just don't quite cut it for you.

So for me whilst I'm not particularly prog, I do like Gabriel, Floyd, early Genesis (up then there were 3) Focus, Camel, VDGG amongst others.

I've really had a good go at Yes, with their box set, but I just don't 'get' them. I can appreciate the musicianship which is very good. However something is just plain missing for me. oddly though I absolutely love Wakemans King Arthur so go figure.

Likewise ELP, again undeniably excellent musicians, but aside from the single Fanfare for the common man, again they miss the mark completely for me.

Both these bands should sit quite comfortably among all the other mid 70's back catalogue filling going on, but they just don't.

So does anyone else have bands that you just hit a brick wall with, and more interestingly have you subsequently 'got' any of them?

I used to be that way with The Fall. Always respected them and always loved Mark E Smith's persona, but only clicked musically in the past 3 or 4 years.

Foo Fighters are the other one that sticks out, for me.

The fall, Tom waits, nirvana and any form of jazz.

Also classical music is dull.

Sometimes I love The Fall, other times it can sound like someone scratching their fingers on a blackboard. If I'm in the right mood then it's a wondrous cacophony.

I sort of like Grohl, and do like the 1st couple of FF LP's, but he's somewhat formulaic* in his (very successful) approach.

* A nice way of saying the repetition is getting a bit Quo like.

I never used to like Crosby, stills and Nash.

But I love David Crosby's twitter and I'm listening to more and more.

Hawkwind, post Lemmy, top the list for me. I know a few people who are in to them but can't see the attraction. Saw them in the mid 80s and should have had a lot more to drink before. Countless opportunities to see them since., never bothered. Also Dave Lee Roth. Where would he be without Eddie Van Halen? His comment following his passing was luke warm standing out like a sore thumb amongst all the tributes. I don't like his voice, think he is a p***k and a poor mans David Coverdale. (Hope he is not a member of a hifi forum  ). Van Halen only did it for me when Sammy Hager replaced him and that is when I saw them. I had a problem with Yes initially but eventually got into them.

I feel I should like Rush as bands of their ilk and vintage take up a lot of my music collection, but no matter how many times I've tried over many years they still leave me cold.

Geddy's voice is an acquired taiste. I like both the screaming of the 70s and the subsequent more mellow delvery. Vocals aside the quality of their musicianship cannot be questioned.

I might be taking this thread off at a tangent but......

There are a couple of bands who have made one album I like and the rest sounds to my ears like they should have stayed in their bedrooms.

I remember the first time I heard the Yes album. It sounded so different from anything else I had heard and to this day it’s still a favourite. Everything else I have heard is pretty much terrible to my ears - just a dirge.

Similar for Genesis. Selling England is a gem - the rest sounds like public school boys indulging themselves.

Rolling Sones. Some girls is great but apart from their 60s singles their other stuff is just dull to my ears.

I’m expecting to take some flak on this but in the sprit of another thread also started today no ad-hom please !
