TIS between cdp and preamp

Unread post by karatestu »

Having grown up with Naim and their silly din connectors I am making my first foray into RCA (phono) plugs so I can use a recently acquired TIS cable.

I have checked for continuity on the TIS and the "hot" inner is connected to the hot on the other end of the cable. The "cold" sleeve on one end is connected to the cold on the other end. Hot & cold are not connected. The faraday cage on the outside is not connected to anything.

I need two signal connections between Naim cdp and diy preamp (right & left channels) and one zero volt ground connection. Naim tie system 0V to mains earth in their cd players. I will be soldering in rca sockets at the cdp and preamp and need to know where to put which wires.

This is what I think;

1) right and left channels should use the two hot pins in the centre - red cable for right channel, blue for left channel
2) zero volts (ground) should only be connected on one of the cables - use the cold sleeve of the red cable, the cold sleeve on the blue cable should not be connected to anything otherwise ground loop hum is the product.

Have I got this right? Not knowing anything about the TIS internal wiring and plug connections has lead me to this confusion. :roll:

FFS it is Naim that are daft. A RCA phono cable is as simple as it gets, they were designed so your Granny could use them on her Radio Set. It is Naim who are the arses who create confusion, it is one of their ways of saying "look how special we are". :angry-steamingears:

Not a feckin' clue mate, you got into that Naim din nonsense so you get yourself out of it. The only contact I ever had with it was to look, shake my head and sigh, and walk away.

Furrymuff.

Maybe I should have asked about the construction of the TIS and then I can work out what I need to do with the socket wiring .

I will assume my assumption earlier is correct and I will carry on :guiness;

It is a normal rca phono cable otherwise it wouldn't be a normal rca phono cable, I really don't know what you are asking me. Google it would be easier.

Ah, if it is normal then that is all I need to know. Sorry for the confusion, these stupid naim din connectors etc really mess up the brain :roll:

Cheers :guiness;

Naim are a real pain with din connectors, and also running signal and power down the same cable. :naughty:
Good luck with it Stu.

A typical Naim CD player uses a standard 5 pin DIN for audio output I remember. Pin 2 screen, pin 3 L+ and pin 5 R+ from memory. Pins 1 and 4 aren't used.

Its easy now i have got rid of my brain fart.

2 signal, one zero volts.

Red cable hot (inner pin)= right channel signal
Blue cable hot (inner pin) = left channel signal
Red cable cold (sleeve) = zero volt connection
Blue cable cold (sleeve) = not connected at either end
