Re: Happy Valley
Where I live in Salford was the area where Peter Kay did most of his driving around in Car Share. We spent most of the first show playing spot the landmark, including our house
Audrey Roberts' Corrie house is 10 doors down from me. Bloody murder when they were filming, couldn't move for catering vans.

Re: Happy Valley
I can remember watching the Tour de France a year or two back. Harrogate, Hebden Bridge, Huddersfield - it was a trip back through my childhood.
This coming May we have the first 3 days of the Giro d'Italia just down the road here. Means that all through roads will be shut for the duration.
Music Trivia: Supertramp's sax player John Anthony Helliwell comes from Todmorden - he was well known for telling long-winded Yorkshire jokes to bemused American audiences.
Oh, and Captain Picard of the USS Enterprise (Patrick Stewart) actually came from Huddersfield.

Re: Happy Valley
Jeff Love (bandleader) came from Todmorden, Champion Jack Dupree settled in Halifax for a time. There's a BBC documentary about this which starts with a long short of a street of council houses and then zooms up to an open window through which you see Champion Jack playing piano and singing. His daughter still lives here.
Halifax saw the first solo stage performance by Dusty Springfield. I think Sonny Terry and Browny McGhee spent some time around here.
Somewhere or other I have a wonderful book about the local music scene in the 60s before pop radio when artists had to tour to get their music out there. Even the Beatles had to go to Bradford.
And, a little later, one of Jimi Hendrix's first gigs in the UK was in Leeds where he played in a pub to an audience of 6. The next day, he played Ilkley but word about that gig had got out and hundreds turned up. Unfortunately, an off-duty policy office noticed all the commotion and had the gig shut down on the grounds that there were too many in there (and still trying to get in) for it to be safe.
The Sex Pistols last UK gig was in Huddersfield.
Patrick Stewart was born in Mirfield. My wife did a postgraduate degree at Huddersfield Uni and I went along to her graduation and the promise the Jean-Luc himself (Patrick Stewart is Chancellor of the Uni) would be there. However, all we got was a pre-recorded video message.

One of the many strange things that exist below the Antonine and Hadrian's Wall in that uncharted land south of the Tweed and the Tyne. Further even than the Eden and the Tees. There be Dragons!

Re: Happy Valley
I confess. I was a student in Huddersfield - but it was still a Polytechnic then. Stayed living there for a while when I got my first job in Bradford.
Strange, gloomy times. How I miss them ....
