Re: Happy Valley
Just got a reply from Juliet about the Happy Valley premiere:
"That's brilliant!! Yes I was there I organised the whole thing and founded the charity. It was an amazing night we raised £30,000 in seat sales which the government match - so £60,000 will go direct to the community in Calderdale. I think you will love the series!! ""

Hey Terry, are all the women round there bunny boilers? It's not going to end well is it.
I recognised the pub where the policeman got drugged, just outside Meltham.

Re: Happy Valley
I am very disappointed that Happy Valley as chosen to extend the narrative story line from the previous series rather than explore a new narrative .
One of the awesome things about the wire was how it extended its storylines from the drug dealing on the projects to the wider community , medica , education and local politics to show how they were all inextricably linked .
p.s – I thought that pub was in scouthead saddleworth , but I wouldn’t bet on it

Nope, definitely the Will's 'O' Nats pub.Daniel Quinn wrote:I am very disappointed that Happy Valley as chosen to extend the narrative story line from the previous series rather than explore a new narrative .

I agree with you to a certain point regarding the storyline, it will be interesting to see how they develop it further. The mad women who visited him in prison seems a touch formulaic to me, where as the bunny boiler who's going to make the policeman's life a nightmare got it spot on, a proper nutter.
To be honest though comparing any program with The Wire is futile, as The Wire is probably the best TV series ever IMO ( only Breaking Bad comes close).

Re: Happy Valley
I lived in Elland in the early 90's and used to visit the wonderful Huddersfield Victorian Market. It's the only place I've ever seen that had 2nd-hand bras on sale...
I bought a huge 6-pronger for my (then) wife as a joke birthday present. All wrapped-up in gold paper and everything!
We're divorced now, although her mum found it hilarious.

true , I wasn't so much comparing as illustrating the possibility .BillyBones wrote:

Re: Happy Valley
Looks like about half the membership here lives/has lived in the Huddersfield area.
Still suffering from the flu - so I just got 'Happy Valley - season 1' on DVD and intend to binge-watch the whole thing!
If that doesn't cure me - nothing will.

Re: Happy Valley
I guess I'm a bit biased about this because a lot of the exteriors are shot within a few miles of Aar 'Aas. I can even tell you that the chairs in Catherine's kitchen come from Andy Thornton's Architectural Antiques.
Never seen any of The Wire or Breaking Bad or 24 - which lots of people raved about.
Parochial, Moi!
