I was a Win10 naysayer too, but once I got a handle on it I slowly came around. It's really no worse than any other Micro$haft software, and once you kick out the bits that try to "nanny" you through every decision it runs quite smoothly.

The laptop I've just rebuilt has Windows 10 Pro on it. I couldn't find a way to turn the updates off.

Bearing in mind it's not on a domain. Nor monitored via SCCM. It's just used as a home laptop now.
But you are on a domain, like it or not, Microsofts! OS as a service is what is coming (Microsoft 365). Get used to it or use Linux. Resistance is futile.

I use this method with great success on my 1 win 10 machine ( gaming only ) also i use it to maintain friends and family's machines that use Win 10 take a look and see if it is something you would be happy using .

I also use a prog called O+O shutup10 with great effect but the way you set it up will be down to how you wish to configure your machine.
Takes a little time to choose what your preferences would be but there is a guide to follow on both of these sites.

Thanks for that.

That underlines how badly implemented Windows 10 is. Instead of it being an obvious menu selection in the Updates section of Windows, you have to use gpedit or regedit (or a 3rd party application) to turn the updates off. How stupid is that? If you (or someone else) hadn't shown me how to do it, I never would have found out.

I will be using Windows 7 for a long time after Microsoft have turned off their support for it...

Is it daft on my part to ask why people who complain about how bad W10 is are the same people who don't want the updates that help improve it?

My current PC problems have led me to finding a different email program 'eM Client' which has automatic setup of accounts and is a doddle to use.

Was using Windows Live Mail which has long been discontinued and wasn't very user-friendly. :hand:

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

All I want is a computer that I can control and that will let me run the (limited number of) applications that I want.

What we have with Win 10 is a kind of permanent state of Beta testing with it.

I'm using eM client too, fretless. An older version. When I allowed it to automatically update, it introduced a huge bug whereby it would no longer work with my gmail address. So I reverted to the older version and have stuck with that.
I prefer Outlook to eM client. But I don't prefer Outlook enough to spend money to have it instead of eM client.
I've also installed Thunderbird and will be trying that out in the next few weeks...

eM Client is fine here and updated just a few days ago. However, this laptop refuses to update .Net 4.8 and also the new 'feature pack' yet allows updates on Windows Defender. I've run numerous 'fix-it' tools plus sfc and DISM which tell me there's no errors, so currently I'm stumped. My wife's laptop was the one we thought wouldn't update properly, yet it fully updated in the background and is better than ever...

I understand that there'll be no 'new' operating system, but every so often, 'Windows 10' will have a major update.

Sometimes I have to run a Java update before the Windows 10 update can work.
