So

Unread post by terrybooth »

No, not the Peter Gabriel album or the HiFi retail organisation (no capitalisation or umlaut on the O): the word 'So'; in particular, beginning an answer or a response with the word 'So'. Usually, emphasised by drawing out the vowel: "Soo-o"

To my ears, this has gained in currency in the past 5 years or so. Listen to interviews on TV and the Radio, how many time do you hear it? (Melvin Bragg on Kepler (Radio 4) this morning - one person used it almost every time he opened his mouth.)

Typically, it is uttered by an 'expert' on some matter or other - typically academic or technical.

It's a useful device. It makes it appear that the listener has listened to and fully understood the interlocutor so that what s/he is about to say fully responds to the previous statement - rather like the german, 'Also', meaning 'thus'.

Do you find yourself using this? When did it start? Where did it come from?

Or is it, like the use of the word 'invite' instead of 'invitation', an older English useage which has return to favour?

(No points at all to the person who starts the next post, "So...")

I've noticed it more as an opening gambit to an anecdote; 'So, I was out shopping yesterday ...' rather than as a conversational response. In the latter case, I guess it's shorthand for 'So what you're saying is ....'. I don't use it myself AFAIK, but I don't mind others using it. As for where it came from and how it started, I dunno.

Interesting my daughter used the word 'square' yesterday in reference to someone she regards as boring/staid. I've not heard that usage for several decades. Possibly it's been revived alongside the word 'Hipster' without me noticing it.

Can't say I've noticed it Terry. What I catch myself doing more and more though and much to my shame, is missing out the personal pronoun at the start of a sentence, as I did with the first sentence in this post. It should, of course, read -" I can't say I've noticed it Terry." For the really picky (me for instance) I also missed the chance to add a conjunction to that same little sentence, which really really should read - " I can't say that I've noticed it Terry." It's pure laziness.

Back to Sooo-o though; the person uttering it is probably using it as a device to gain one or two more seconds to formulate their response/answer. Y'know?
That's why so many old blues songs start a verse with the first line sung twice. Most of the original songs were made up on the fly and while the singer was repeating that first line he was actually thinking up the third and fourth lines. Eventually, somehow, it just ended up being the norm for a lot of country blues tunes.
I woke up this morning, feeling round for my shoes
I got up this morning, feeling round for my shoes
You know by that, people, I must have got the walking blues
Joe, some real cool cats are using the word "square" these days. Can you dig it daddy-o, or does it wig you out man?

Thanks to Joe for reminding me of the colloquial use of 'So' to start a story, which was much used by comedians as I remember, "So, there I was, in Tescos, dressed in a tutu, looking for a large bottle of Grand Marnier...'.

There is a bit of that in this other use. It sets the listener up for a bit of a story (explanation). Maybe it's always been around and I've never noticed it before. Maybe it's something that's crept out of the colloquial and into received English (can't get more 'received' than radio 4!).

A bit of a pause there as I went searching for a recording of the Blue Round from ISIHAC. Just because I've mentioned Radio Four. Couldn't find it, so just have to make do with this.

I think I might be in the HiFi trade.
I am not currently seeking treatment for this.

Thinking about that 'Sooooo', it gives the speaker an air of authority. The impression that he knows the answer and it is obvious from his superior intellect.

Ego-trip from someone who needs to prove something.
