What yer doing for new years eve

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

Me - taxi driver and the only man at a Russian new years eve party, made up of women of a certain age. Now this is NOTHING like an English boring do, these women ENJOY themselves. Russian parties are about loads of good food, mostly different Russian salads, and some seriously tasty snacks it is better that you don't ask what is in them  But the important part is the drinking, any of them could drink any of you under the table. I remember a similar night about 5 years ago where Nadia drank until she could hardly move (apart from to drink more) then drank herself almost back to sobber, got her home somehow in the car (BTW I hardly drink). Woke up in the morning with a raging thirst, drunk some water and was pissed again. I think it took two days for her to recover. AND she is normal for a Russian

The other tradition when everyone is just pissed enough, is we all have to do something as entertainment, sing, recite, tell story, play an instrument, dance - it is required.

Quiet evening in with my brother & sister-in-law up from Kent, perhaps taking in a film after dinner. No booze at all for me thanks to one of my regular chest infections and the usual antibiotics. We probably will not bother seeing the New Year in, unless local fireworks wake the dogs up in which case we will.

Funny that. Being a mildly Irish Republican household (the surname gives it away) we are tempted to think the same of the heretics, but of course rise above that. ;)

I'm Catholic. But I can run quite fast... Especially when I ditch the torch.
