Well the latest storm is here.No farming will get done today. Crops are all late this year, normally most cereals would have been harvested by now. Field after field still standing. What an awful year for agriculture. An an awful year for everybody else but for different reasons.

I'm in an area where a lot of apples are grown. Much of the fruit has literally been burnt off the trees in the recent heatwave.

The maize seems to be doing alright, though.

Yes crop yields are suffering. Depending on the world harvest, the only saving grace when yields are down is the price goes up due to supply and demand.

Some farmers are having to spray their cereals because the grain in the ear is starting to sprout ! After applying round up you have to wait two weeks before the combined harvester can be sent in. If it stops bloody raining that is. There is going to be a huge rush to get it all in and then cultivate the fields for sowing next year's crop.

Some may have to get grain dried for storage which is costly. If it is above a certain moisture content when harvested then it starts to heat up in the pile and goes off (ruined).

A proper farmer's whinge for you there  Good job I have other business interests as well

More ffing rain today. At this rate the contractors will be putting tracks on the combined harvester. You might not know but farmers can get in to trouble if they try to travel on ground that is too wet and the soil structure is damaged (and they get found out). But then why would you want to damage your own soil when it's health is fundamental to everything to do with agriculture.

Big brother is always watching

We've had plague, we're about to have famine. War next?

Maybe David Hathaway was right, maybe Armageddon will happen before he dies...

Or maybe :hbs: :-?

It's hammering it down here

My local river (The Wharfe) is set to shoot it's load tomorrow :-? Whilst I am not on the flood plain I know people who are so hoping it's not too bad. The Wharfe comes a long way before it gets here (65 miles) all the way from high up in the Yorkshire Dales. Melting snow and the rain of the last few days is all coming this way

Similar tale here Stu with the River Calder.

I live on the moorland catchment area and its not stopped snowing or raining for the past week really.

Looks like Todmorden, Walsden, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd are all about to "cop it". Poor sods
in the valley's will probably need some help.
