The abolition of zero-hours contracts probably wouldn't solve the problems they cause. They would just rear their ugly heads in another guise. There are also people, reportedly, for whom zero-hours contracts are a good solution, and suit their lifestyle. The idea would be to build checks and balances into the principle, to give workers on zero-hours contracts the same rights and protections as the rest of the work-force. Mind you, with Johnson intent on sending us hurtling out of Europe with no requirement to maintain the protections we enjoy now we might all be in the same boat this time next year.

All to often companies run by chancers ( Mike Ashley is one example) care about nothing but their net profit and the share price when they are a listed business. These business regularly request by text message that zero hour workers turn up at very short notice only then to turn some of the workers away on arrival because they always over request to ensure that they not only have have a full roster but they cherry pick who actually gets to work. So a zero hour worker struggling to pay his or her way in life can actually lose money by attempting to attend work as they more often use public transport. Any thing Julian Richer can do to curtail this nonsense is welcomed by me.

Relatively simply remedied by making the company pay a minimum call out charge for all contracted employees, say 2 or 4 hours, irrespective of whether they are actually given any work.

Geoff I agree however that's a far too sensible and pragmatic solution to be given consideration by Boris & co.
