Richer Sounds founder bankrolls push to end zero-hours contracts

Unread post by slinger »

The millionaire businessman Julian Richer is bankrolling a campaign that aims to stamp out the use of controversial zero-hours contracts in Britain.

Zero Hours Justice, which launches today, plans to hold free legal advice clinics around the country for zero-hours workers to identify people whose experiences in the workplace could provide the basis for legal action that could help to change the law.

I’d love to do a Gina and beat the government,” said Richer, in a reference to the anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller. “We will seek to expose zero-hours contracts as sham contracts when they do not represent the truth of what is actually happening.”

The campaign, which has the support of the TUC, will be backed by a national advertising campaign as it seeks to “move the needle” of public opinion on a practice that has become common in many workplaces.

He is a top bloke, back in May last year he gave 60% of the Richer Sounds shares to a staff trust and the trust effectively control and own the business. His fight against the worst aspects of capitalism marks him out as someone special, especially in these current times. My belief is zero hour contracts should never ever be allowed in a civilised society and I congratulate Mr Richer for taking a stand against them. 🙌

+1
However I am aware that before the election the Government said they would be looking at curtailing the .power of the courts, stung by the suspension of Parliament being deemed unlawful. This could speed things along.

The problem is that fort the few, a zero hours contract is desirable and there's no way to get both no zero hours and the zero hours option.

This is more to do with the greed of certain individuals and companies to maximise their returns.

Life's a bitch then you die.

The vast majority of those on zero hours contracts are on them as a desperate last resort, not through choice.

ZH was a way for opportunist employers to effectively make a part of their workforce self-employed, but still hold them to a restrictive contract, and still dictate (very poor) terms and conditions. If ZH contracts were abolished it would simply mean that employers would have to get better at planning their labour requirements.

People need security, a living wage, development and prospects for advancement.

Effective legislation and enforcement are the foundation of reasonable employment conditions.

But, in reality, it is not the actual number of hours that is the problem, it is the uncertainty about the number of hours. How can you plan your life if you don't know when you'll be working in a week's time or what you'll be earning?

Why are good, ethical employers able to manage without ZH contracts while greedy, opportunist employers see them as essential?

(I think I just answered my own question).

I agree with you I think the point is banning zero hour contracts achieves nothing other than a headline

it needs to address the security of a sensible number of hours to be of any use
